Making changes

Postby cougar » Thu Oct 08, 2020 8:57 am

Been a year sense I posted my "rethinking" thread. Besides making my own cooler tubes, I'm upgrading (again) my H1C to a 62mm compressor. I also picked up a dual intercooler temperature gauge to see what I'm actually getting into the engine. Also, now that the warranty has expired on the injection pump, I can start messing with it as well. After everything is together and done some retuning, I'll look at injectors again. Maybe 5X???

Well, ya know, the best laid plans of mice and men. The mice escaped and I didn't get laid. Things finally settled down and I started working on the cooler tube project. Well, the guy that told me a 2nd gen turbo elbow would bolt right up lied. Different angle. 1st gens are 90°, 2nd gens aren't. Next, the reducer boots I bought are too short on the turbo side for the prefab tube which is exactly the same length as the original. Needs to be 5". On order. I hope I will be okay on the intake side, being that tube is cut to fit.

Got the turbo to intercooler pipe installed. Easy with all the right parts. Next is to start on the intercooler to intake. I need gaskets to R&R the induction horn. Local parts store has them. Once the new horn is on I can measure, cut, and bead the tube. After that, I need to drill and tap a couple 5/16-32 holes for the temperature probes. One in the elbow off the turbo (the easy one), and one in the induction horn. That will require a little more creativity. The horn is pre drilled and taped for water/meth injection, but they are 1/8 pipe. So, I will need to drill and tap the pipe plug. Going to be tight. The next part is going to be what to change next. The whole point of the folly is to lower my EGT. Do I upgrade the H1C from its current 60mm compressor to the 62mm, or start decreasing fuel out of the injection pump. I guess that will all depend on how well it runs with just the larger tubes.

Okay. Got the intercooler to intake done. Took it for a post alteration check drive. 1st impression? Eh. Most notable was throttle response. Definite improvement there. Almost worth the price of admission. Though I didn't push it on this short drive, I did push it to 35psi from almost a stop. EGT maybe kinda sorta lower, but I can't say for sure. Another thing I noticed is my cruising boost. It use to be zero along the river with a slight down hill. Not I see about 2psi. That was about what my 5 speed ran at.

Not very happy with Turbo Lab right now, not very happy at all.
Decided to put the 62mm compressor upgrade on and ran into a problem right at the end. When I tighten the compressor housing down it binds the wheel. So it looks like everything I did today will have to be undid. Glad nothing broke during disassembly.

Thought I'd give you an update on Turbo Lab. They, Turbo Lab and the Ebay seller finally contacted me after I started posting bad reviews on BBB, Amazon, and fleabay. First thing the ebay guy did was tell me I had to use a bearing from an HX35 which he would be more than happy to sell me. I pointed out to him and Turbo Lab that their advertisement stated "direct fit" to the H1C. The ebay seller came back and said the bearing should have came with the turbo kit along with instructions. If I didn't get one, he would ship one right out. Notice he changed his statement from "I will sell you one" to "it should have come with it"? I didn't get the bearing or any instructions with the kit. I could only speculate that the bearing and instructions didn't make it into the repackaged for cheap USPS shipping. Theoretically, there should be one coming in the mail.

Okay, got the compressor upgrade installed. It took less time this go around. So this now makes it a 62mm/60mm/16cm. I guess it's true, practice does makes perfect. First thing I noticed was less smoke, a lot less smoke. As for driving, on kinda level sorta ground the boost was down slightly along with the EGT. Pulling the hill on the far end of town I saw the same thing. 8 psi and 950° verses 10 psi and 1000°. From a WOT start it hit 45 psi and didn't exceed 1400°. I didn't notice any spool up delays. I'd call that an improvement considering it use to hit 1600°. I don't think towing will be much of a concern anymore. What to do next?

If your hitting 1400 empty it will get much hotter towing.

I know. The question is what to try next? So far, what I have done has helped a little, but not enough. There is no new information on injectors, but the old stuff would lead me to believe the 7 hole configuration is no longer useable because of the Scheid injection pump unless I go way larger. If I'm going to do that, I might as well go with a larger 6 hole pattern. Say 6 by 13. The theory is the number of holes is connected to RPM and getting the fuel in the bottom of the bowl before atomization breaks it up too much. More holes works better at low RPM and fewer holes at higher RPM. From the different injector configurations I've run over the years, It seems true. I'm certain this will only net, like the others a small improvement, but I believe a necessary one. Mishimoto offers a replacement intercooler that doesn't require a lot of modification. almost plug and play. I think that would be next after injectors.

I put a power stroke intercooler in my 89. Had to fab it anyway, so went that way. I would not call a factory replacement size an upgrade. May want to step it up to a bigger unit.

My Power Stroke intercooler seemed to make quite a big difference along with the 3 inch tubs.
