How much power is a stock air filter worth?

Postby KTA » Fri Sep 01, 2023 5:50 am

So when I was at Firepunks I got to do some testing during dyno runs and I can say that the stock paper air filter was worth 4hp on a 430hp setup and the stock ribbed intercooled air intake hose was worth 1 hp. Not much for gains to be had there!

IIRC, quite a few years ago there was a big bru-ha-ha over air filter. I think because someone collapsed theirs spawning the Big Honking Filter debate. A lot of data was offered up back then. I chose to go with the BHF only because I live in a very dusty environment and not sucking a lot of air at the time. A bigger filter wouldn't clog up as fast. Now that I'm pushing 45psi into the head, I'm glad I did. Never been on a dyno so I don't know what hits the ground. My home-made cooler tubes was the last upgrade. It was more for EGT control than anything else, but I did notice a performance boost.

It being firepunk I believe they have a dual Eddie dyno, which will give the most accurate numbers with a diesel.

After seeing the filters they run on newer trucks and equipment, it’s changed a lot of my thoughts on filter requirements.

My company truck is a 2016 2500 with a 6.7, that stupid factory filter is some square design and I never change it. Truck puts out built VE power all day and never puffs the first hint of smoke. Then we’ve got some 982 Cats with similar, albeit larger, filters of the same design. Same deal, those machines will drive through a stock pile regardless of filter condition. They’re more sensitive to fuel filters due to DPF requirements than anything, they don’t seem to care if they had an air filter full of concrete. Full power, no smoke.

I mean, I still run BHAF style filters, but it is making me rethink the open element and air intake locations.
