aeromotive fuel pump question??

Postby mprmn08 » Sun Apr 13, 2008 11:59 am

I keep hearing people talking about putting other fuel pumps (such as aeromotive or what not) on there trucks. Im kinda new to this so what i was wondering is how do pumps like that work on diesels. Do you just put them inline or what? Thanks for any info.

with my truck i did away with all the motor run pumps and went to an aeromotive electric pump, with a regulator so i can adjust the admount of pressure i put into the pump, this is expecialy good of a 14mm head

most guys run a tandam system witch involves a piston or a regular lift pump and a electric pump, so when they are roping on it they hit the buttom for the electic pump, but for regular driving they just have the lift pump, whats good about this set up is if your electric pump gives out you can relay on your lift pump, but theirs a little more set up work involved

but some guys run an electric pump and a piston or regular lift pump

check treads like "crazzy dual feed ve", or "dual feed"
lots of good info

I'm not sure the limitations on the stock lift pumps on these trucks. I've dealt more with the VP fuel systems.

just put a guage on it and you will see quickly the limits, i would say when you upgrade the injectors its a good time to go to a piston pump

Now as i said i am new to this so forgive my ignorance. I want to learn so i can this on my own i dont wanna say when its done "hey look what someone built for me" but what exactly is a piston pump. im not looking for a technical deffinition but where do i get a decent one and how do they mount to the engine or are they just an stand alone unit that feeds the injection pump. What im looking at doin with this truck is some 80 HP injectors and a turbo upgrade so i can push about 35 psi boost and of course pump mods exhaust and what not. I have pretty decent fab skills and good mech. ability so im willing to do it but i just still need to learn alittle about this add on stuff. Thanks again guys.

well you dont need any injectors to push 35psi
just crank that pump right up and put a 14cm exaust housing on there and you should be over that

http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/d...d.php?t=176472

thats the site that tells you how to put a piston pump on the truck

ebay is usaly a good place to get a pump

A piston pump off of a 2nd gen truck or a replacement low pressure piston pump may be a good bet. I'm running a stock lift pump right now, but wouldn't advise it. I'm either going to go with a piston pump or a carter race pump, it flows 100gph free flow and is rated at 16-18psi. Depending on who you talk to, the stock seals will blow out at about 20psi, others have run 40psi for months for no problem, so who really knows. The piston pumps are only rated at 48gph, but they are rated at pressure rather than free flow. If your fuel pressure drops to zero is when you need to worry, eventually you'll seize the injection pump. The stock lift pump isn't made to keep up with much past stock, even just turning the pump way up can take you past the limits of the stock lift pump if you keep your foot in it for more than a few seconds. Hope this helps.
