Fuel pump location

Postby GO OVRIT » Fri Apr 18, 2008 7:56 pm

I've always mounted my electric pumps as close to the tank as possible so that they are pushing instead of pulling. Anybody see and downside to mounting my A1000 in the tank with a sock connected right to the inlet? The benefits would be less restrictions, a good way to keep the pump cool, and I wouldn't have to worry about an inlet leak letting air in the system. Thanks, Mike

Looooong Tanks

The problem with the fuel tanks in these trucks is they are relatively long. So when you have around a quarter tank or less, the fuel all runs into one end when you go up/downhill, starting/stopping. That's why the pickup is designed with the return going into the basket to prevent fuel starvation at low tank levels. I have this problem with my auxiliary tank, mounted across the bed behind the cab. The pickup is on the driver's side, so when it gets down around a quarter tank it starts sucking air going around left turns.

So if you did that, I'd always be looking to re-fill when it gets down around half full.

I've seen them mounted on the side of the frame rail right next to the fuel tank with either the pickup on top of the tank and also with it on the bottom of the tank. I have a -12an bulkhead fitting in the bottom of the stock fuel tank, with about 10" of hose over to the A1000. There's upsides and downsides to this. I'm fine with it that way.

You're VE's days are numbered (small numbers) if it's got 100um particles flowing through it. Typical new bearing clearances run in the neighborhood of 60um and the VE is certainly alot tighter than that.

I'm hoping he is using that 100 micron inline filter or spin on just to prefilter that a1000. Which is what Aeromotive recommends, minimum 100 micron filter prior to electric pump. Then from his a1000 he directs the fuel through a 10 micron or whatever type spin on filter PRIOR to the injection pump. This is how it should be.

Stock fs1232 filter is about 23 micron, contrary to popular belief (TDR), it's not a 10 micron filter.

Just put it next to the tank on the frame rail Mike and put larger pick-up lines in the tank to feed it. If you are worried about keeping it cool get an inline cooler. It would suck to start sucking air at 1/4 to 1/2 a tank... Think about how much you drive that truck to Florida...
