91.5 Cummins questions

Postby peobryant » Tue Apr 15, 2008 2:45 pm

I have an intercooled '91 and have access to the intercooler from a '97 12 Valve. Would that intercooler be any better than my stock one? And if so would it be just a direct replacement or would I have to modify something?

I also want to buy a set of POD's but was wondering if they are worth the money? I just want a little more horsepower and don't really want to spend a lot of money, and I don't want a set that will destroy my fuel mileage. I also have a stock auto and if I did get a set of POD's would my tranny be able to handle them?

When I get the injectors I also want to get a 3 guage pod to momitor my EGT's, tranny temp and boost. Any recomendations on a brand or will anyone do?

Sorry for the long post and all the questions, but any information would be really helpful. Thanks in advance for the help.

The intercooler will work, but is far from a bolt in upgrade. Not something to be concerned with until you get into more mods.

I would suggest get gauges first. I like Isspros personally. You can get a 2 gauge pod from places like genos or summit that will go on the pillar, and a steering column gauge mount for 94-98 will fit like a glove.

From there, toy with the pump. I have PODS and love them, but I got em before I ever touched my pump....before I joined any of these sites. I lost a little mileage, but that was contributed to my heavy right foot. Your tranny would be okay, though much after stock power you will want to look into torque converter and further tranny mods. Good to have ya here.

I like my PoD's, I would definitely buy them again. I have no basis for comparison other than my stock injectors though. I had the larger 9MM injectors and still noticed a good difference.

I can't help you on the intercooler, I don't know what that is ;)

X2!
Sense your already intercooled, get a pyro and boost gauge to start with and when the EGT start to get out of control...........Then spend your $$$ on a bigger cooler..............Actualy, upgrading your turbo would be ahead of the biger cooler too!!!!!
The two popular upgrade intercoolers are the 2nt gen intercooler, like your thinking of.
and the PS or Power Stroke intercooler........which fits better in a intercooled truck......better then the 2nt gen.
No matter which way you go........it is a fab install!!!
There is lots of power, waiting to be tapped..........................

I just looked on Geno's Garage and looked at gauges. I want to get Boost, EGT, and Tranny temp. Those three cost $234 which seems reasonable, but the triple dash pod I want says it only fits on '98-'02 trucks. Does this really matter or will it still fit in my truck.

I have also been looking for 4 inch exhaust systems with no muffler, but have been pretty unsuccesful. Any ideas where I should look?

Again thanks for the help, I guess I won't worry about that 2nd gen intercooler, and after I get all my gauges I'll order a set of POD's.

Thanks again, I'm glad to be here :D

Stansheaders.com or sourceautotive.biz has 4" exhaust. For intake (Im sure youd like to know  ) go to airflo.com, get 2 rubber 4" 45*s, a 12" piece of 4" exhaust tubing and a 5" long piece, clamps, a BHAF and some metal for an ol smokey mount.

Get gauges and injectors first before ya worry about the intercooler. Those mods alone will make it feel lke a completely different truck!

I would highly recommend the savings of gauges from ebay. They have a tripple pillar for the pre 97 fords that can be trimmed and tweaked to fit pretty nice. All for $150.

Thanks for all the help, I'm going to order either the POD's or gauges pretty soon. The only other question I have is if I get the POD's first, would those alone be able to make my EGT's high enough to do any damage?

Thanks again.

I saw well over 1200 degrees in my first 93 with stock injectors. I'd be pretty easy on it with PODs before you get a pyro.

Thanks for all the help guys, I will be ordering the gauges pretty soon. I think I'm going to get a 4" Exhaust from the turbo back before I get the POD's also. But all the kits I have seen for 1st gens come with mufflers, and who wants one of those? Anyways thanks again for all the help.
