piston LP question

Postby mprmn08 » Thu May 22, 2008 3:03 pm

Im lookin at gettin a piston lift pump for my truck but wondered if there was anything special i have to do to put it on? Is a high pressure pump? and if so do i have to put a reg. between that and my IP or will the IP the way it is handle the higher pressure? thanks guys.

Get the low pressure pump, only puts out 15-16 psi, no regulator needed. You need the spacer, line, and gaskets also. You will need to cut off the insulation from the tappet cover to install the line. It hits if you don't.

Check the part number, someplace on here are all the #'s for the upgrade.
Yup. Out only difference between the 2 is springs and piston size on the inside.

Its just grinding/cutting some of the insulation off the side of the block. Straight above the fuel pump (you will be able to tell once you have the new fuel line) you need to remove some material so there is room for the new line. Its fairly minimal and minor really. Just put the line in place on the pump mark the offending material and remove. Obviously if it sound/feels/looks like your grinding cast iron you have gone to deep.

I would not try to go in there with any type of grinder, cutoff wheel or power tool of any kind. The VE return line is in there somewhere and cutting that would definitely ruin your day. A utility knife or similar works just fine.

Did you cut off the insulation? It's like hard plastic, then foam or something underneath. I cut mine with a 4 inch grinder, with a cutting wheel. When I saw sparks I knew I had to move a little. ;) If I had to do it again, I'd cut it with a knife like Ace said. I didn't realize it was plastic at the time. It did cut pretty good though. :D

Foam is good! just cut it out until the line fits. The tappet cover is stamped steel, like a valve cover on a car. Older car. ;)

Seeing foam is not a bad thing. What you are getting rid of is sound deadening material from the lifter cover, which is tin not cast iron. You really only need a slot cut in it big enough to get the top of the pump and fuel line into. I did like Pete did, used a 4" angle grinder and went from the bottom of the lifter cover to the top and ground till I saw sparks.
