runaway close call

Postby gear jammer 91" » Sat Jan 03, 2009 9:37 pm

I just got done putting a 366 spring in my brother's 92 dually. It's amazing the difference in the pump's from one truck to another! I can turn my fuel screw in until it bottoms out and my truck will just start to runaway. When I put the pump top back on my brothers truck I ran the fuel screw in a ways, it wasn't close to being bottomed out yet, when he started the truck it was surging really bad at idle. Of course I thought I should give it a little throttle and see if it would go away  , luckily I barely blipped the throttle and when it started climbing it was still at a low enough rpm that I could shut it down with the shut down lever. It could have been really ugly though, but I got lucky. :D

I usually have the intake off before I start a truck after doing any pump mods, but I've got used to working on my own truck and knowing roughly were it's safe and were it's not. After it tried to runaway I pulled the intake tube off the turbo and got something to block it with, like I should have before I started the truck the first time :bh: .
It really gets your attention when It's not your truck that your working on and it tries to go horribly wrong in a hurry. . But I learned my lesson and nobody's truck got hurt  .

i had that problem with my 90, i had a 92 that i turned the screw in as far as it would go and had no problems, when i bought my 90 i had figured the same, ha, i cranked it all the way went to start it, i didnt have the intake off and i had a shut off cable instead of the shut of solinoid, when it fired it coughed a little then went wide open along with my eyes  i freaked out and went to pull the cable a little to hard and broke it, it sucked i ended up ripping my intake apart to close it off
