Turbo sizes?

Postby Swaggs » Sun Feb 01, 2009 11:51 pm

Question, what is the size of the exhaust size on my 92 intercooled.. It seems like one place says one thing and another says something else.. 12 is what i think i am seeing most.. and, to upgrade, should I leave that stock, and upgrade the compressor, or change the whole turbo?
k, thanks

If you're asking about the turbine housing size, then it should be either a 21cm^2 or a 18.5cm^2 housing. The number will be stamped inside the housing close to where it bolts to the exhaust manifold. A 12, 14, or 16cm^2 housing will all be upgrades, especially over the 21. I think that all, or at least most of, the 92's had the 21cm^2 housing. My 92 did. I went to a 16 and I really like it.

Whether or not you should upgrade the turbine housing, the compressor, both, or switch to a different turbo entirely, depends on what your plans are for the truck. Daily driver, towing beast, drag racing, sled pulling, off roading, some combination of the above? Horsepower goals? We need more info so that we can help you make a decision.

hey, yea, sorry, i am in iraq right now and dont have hands on with the truck, so I am asking questions to get a game plan for when I get home.. plans are for it to be a daily driver, and to get as much power, still keeping driveability and mileage..

Hope I didn't come across as angry there, I was just trying to get all of the info from you so that we can help. :D If it's strictly a daily driver, you could get away with a compressor upgrade and a turbine housing change. Add in a set of new injectors and you could be at 350+ hp depending on tuning. It will be hot, but if you're not towing, it shouldn't be too bad. There are a couple of members on here who have gone that route. PToombs and wannadiesel, I believe, both have that style of a combo and are between 350 and 400 hp at the wheels. If your looking to tow with it, you'll probably want to go with a full turbo replacement.

Thank you for your service. :salut:

I shouldnt be doing any big towing, nothing a ford ranger couldnt pull.. I just ummm......'acquired?' a turbo from a military application.. its a schwitzer or however you spell it.. its from a large 4 cylinder mercedes engine, its in good shape, and i am going to look up the numbers to see if its usable.. soo, we will see. anyways thanks for the info, I can use all of it i can get, the diesel bug has bitten, and I havent even seen my truck in person yet.. hah
