Drive Pressure

Postby 93_Fummins » Fri Jun 26, 2009 10:05 am

To those who are keeping an eye on it, what kind of setup are you using to monitor drive pressure? Are there gauge kits, or did you fab something?

I know there was an article in DieselPower on a drive pressure gauge setup, but I totally breezed past it because I wasn't concerned with drive pressure at the time. Now I'm curious about it, but I can't find the issue.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The most common set-up involves a few feet of copper tubing ran from the manifold to a pressure gauge.

Creative folks use electronic pressure transducers instead of gauges and put a filter in line.

If you want to be cheap about it, you can use a copper tube hooked up to an oil pressure gauge, and plug it in to where your pyro used to be. Set it on your hood and make a pass down the street :D As long as you don't change anything, there you are-you know your drive pressure.

Hook it to a tire pressure gauge. Not only is that cheaper than an oil pressure gauge, it stores the highest pressure reading!

I am using a liquid filled 100 psi gauge I bought from princess auto for $20 and copper line. Reads excellent and no issues with carbon so far

Just make sure to use duct tape that is color coordinated to your truck when you tape it to the windshield wiper.

Ideally you want about a 1:1 drive to boost ratio. Anything more than 1.5:1 drive to boost is usually pretty bad. So if you're running 50psi, you should have about 50-75psi of drive. Less is always better. Some diesel racing engines that operate in narrow RPM ranges will actually be on the negative side. Somewhere around 70psi drive 90psi boost.

Fair enough. I just didn't know if there was any trouble with heat and soot and mechanical gauges. I'm not quite to the turbo tuning point yet, but I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row before I get too carried away.

Never mind. The article I was thinking about was in Diesel World, not Diesel Power, and was for the new ISSPRO Performax electronic gauge system.

It's a pretty trick system too. It uses a computer to take signals from various sensors and sends output signals through 3 wires to be picked up by as many guages as you want. The gauges are daisy-chained together and only pick up the signal intended for them. Each has stepper motor needle movements and an auto recall feature.

Ya. Don W. from isspro was talking about thoes to me last time I had him on the phone. It sure would be easier to hook up but I bet they are pricey.
