Just picked up an HX35. Have ?'s

Postby 90dodgectd » Fri Jul 03, 2009 1:57 pm

Hey guys I have a couple questions here. I just picked up a HX35 w/the cast turndown housing and downpipe off an 01 CTD for a 100 bucks. Fist question is since my truck is Non I/C will I need to fab up a new crossover pipe right? Im pretty sure I have to but I might have saw someplace where someone got it to work with the stock one. Now since I have to turn the snail shell counterclockwise to match up with the crossover, will I still be able to use the wastegate? If I can't use the wastegated housing can I put my 16cm housing on it? What are the HX35 mapped at, 35psi? Please tell me anything else I need to complete this project. Oil Lines, Gasket set, etc. I have never done a turbo swap so bear with me. Thanks.

Your 16cm housing will fit. To clock the compressor housing you will need to pull it off and remove the tiny roll pin that keeps it from turning. I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't turn, then I saw the small notch in the housing and went "WTH is that for?" The wastegate won't work after you turn it.

You will need an oil supply line adaptor- your 90 doesnt have one, and the HX most likely needs one, if it wasnt left on there.

I did an HX35 install on a nonIC truck using the stock cross over. Knowing now what I didnt know then, I'd not do it that way again. I cut 1/2" or so off the end of the stock crossover, then bought a piece of 1-1/4" (I think) silicone turbo hose, and with some liberal use of PB Blaster, I got the tubing over the compressor oulet. I left the OEM hose on the crossover, and layered the new hose on top of it. Clamp it all together, and it works.

If you want an improvement, get a hi-rise intake horn from a FL70, et al, and run an elbow from a IC outlet, and connect it with some pipe and silicone hoses. Better air flow, and you dont run the risk of ripping the silicone hose when putting it over the turbo outlet.
