Fueling issues

Postby seeker1056 » Thu Jul 30, 2009 12:14 am

Besides the fuel shutoff issue I also am now having a revving issue

Just before the fuel solenoid completley went the motor started/was having intermittant revving issues.

just off idle at say 1100 or so rpm it would stutter and stumble and blow blue and white smoke til you forced it enough fuel to climb past the stumble.

Once cleared the motor would run fine and rev properly with nothing but black smoke or clear when not pushed

the motor wouldnt stumble again until it sat and cooled off, and even then not always.

I was thinking it was maybe plunger debris in the delivery valves was the cause, but they have been cleaned out now, and now the motor is doin the stumble thing more than it is not.

It acts almost like timing goes way out of wack then comes back somehow because the motor now sometimes hiccups or pops (almost like a backfire) tryin to get past the stumble,

Is it possible the timing piston is sticking?

or is there some other issue I am missing like a plugged or cracked injector?

I also loosened off the injector lines at idle, one at a time, and each seemed to make a noticable change in rpm and there was definitely a good flow of fuel spray from the fittings so I dont think it is an injector

I have good fuel supply and a constant 22 psi pressure, and once cleared past the stumble it will easily rev to over 4000 rpm with no hesitation or other noticable issues

thoughts???

would appear the timing piston is siezed from maybe a piece of debris from the shutoff plunger, foggs terrible and no power till about 2600 rpm then it clears and goes like stink

Gonna try retarding the pump itself and see if I can take some timing out of it mechanically and pretend it is a fixed timing P-pump till Saturday when i have time to remove the pump and go through it

Maybe 20-22 or 24 degrees fixed timing will cure most of the low rpm stutter instead of the 30 degrees it would have siezed at full advance

This is your Giles pump that's having problems?

The modified timing advance mechanism might be having a problem?

no - I am on my second fuel solenoid that self destructed, and the bits are in the pump very likely from what I am told by more than a few people

You would not believe how many little pieces came out of the delivery valves when i cleaned them out.

I Dont think Giles is to blame for this one my friend

I'm not attempting to blame his craftsmanship, I'm just conjecturing that perhaps his modifications would be more prone to problems than a stock pump, largely in attempt to subtly manipulate the posting of details regarding the timing advance modifications in the course my conjecture being proved false.

Man I wish we had a custom pump builder here in commy fornia. or even in Oregon. How much does it cost to have a "Giles" pump made?

each pump is custom made and priced accordingly so I cant answer what a Giles pump costs

I do know he has sold several now to people in the US since i started him on the VE cummins pump and chatted here about it

I just want a pump that fuels like a 14mm without being so unreliable so I can have a track truck that I can drive to the track and maybe stop for lunch on the way home aka. DD/Weekend Warrior. I would like to break 500hp with big twins and RELIABILITY. I am piecing together my aeromotive fuel system right now.
