Starwheel Function

Postby darestie » Tue Aug 11, 2009 7:19 am

To my understanding the star wheel determines how "sensitive" the fuel pin is to boost by increasing or decreasing preload on the spring. I was messing with mine the other day. I had already turned mine clockwise about 15 clicks and I turned it 5 more, so 20 total clicks clockwise. I also went and turned my smoke screw in 3/4 turns form the stock setting. The truck seems much more responsive, especially at lower rpms, But the smoke decreased a lot, even with the smoke screw in more. It would seem that the less preload on the spring (turned down clockwise), equals more low-end power. Do most of you bottom out the starwheel or is there a point where you would want a little resistance on the fuel pin? For maximum performance and economy how would the starwheel and smoke screw be set?

less smoke is not a bad thing especially if you get more power out of it. More smoke usually equals higher EGTs, a bad thing for the turbo.
Best approach is to adjust one component at a time until you are happy with the results, then move to the next one. You may need to go back and fine tune a previous adjustment, but that is fine.
RIP 91.5 W250 5 speed. The great experiment.
