Lost Low End Torque.

Postby Ram360man » Sun Jul 04, 2010 8:32 pm

While I had my 727 out for my rebuild I got bored. Pulled the fuel pin out and ground it down. I also added a Holley Black fuel pump. I put the tranny back in and the low end is just dead. Once it gets going it pulls a lot harder though. It was smoking a lot so I backed the smoke screw all the way out and turned the starwheel up two turns. Took care of 50% of the smoke and it seemed snappier down low. Am I just pumping to much diesel in down low and putting the fire out???? The turbo still seems to spool at the same rate but idk. I need to back the fuel off anyways. Wasn't paying attention and hit 34 psi and 1700 degrees with the stock HC1. The fuel pin and lift pump were the only things I did while the transmission was out.

I had the same issue after my fuel pin grind. I backed the star wheel way off and really picked up the low end again and got rid of a bunch of smoke. I left the fuel screw all the way in.

If your base fuel pressure is above 7psi you will lose some dynamic timing in the pump and advance your timing more than needed at low rpms. This will reduce torque and throttle response.

I'm running a piston lift pump, so that might be the issue.

Thanks for the replys. I cranked the starwheel up some more. Most of the smoke is gone and it will actually spin the tires again. The throttle response is about 75% of what it used to be and I can live with that. I'm running the stock lines and filter with the black pump. So maybe i am over 7 psi. I need to get a fuel pressure gauge for this thing sometime anyways. Just doesn't feel right going blind. Thanks for the help.
