Drain For Second Turbo In Oil Pan.

Postby AHineman » Thu Feb 24, 2011 6:57 am

When I pulled the cold pipe and intercooler pipe off of my truck to clean up the soot from my exhaust leak, I noticed a little oil in them...Checked my bottom turbo and had a little in the compressor housing also. I know teed drains work, but mine was just to low to drain well enough. So I got fittings together to put the drain in my oil pan. I used a 3/4" coupler, cut in half and welded to a 2" by 2" piece of 1/8" plate with a 3/4" hole through it, just because its easier for me to weld to the pan while under the truck. I put a 3/4" hole in my oil pan, half way between the 4th and 5th bolt from the back, with its center 1 3/4" down from the rail. The 1/4" pilot hole hit no oil. Finishing the hole with the 3/4" bit caused some oil to run down the pan. My question is...is this hole high enough to drain correctly? It's right on the verge of the level in the oil pan after all the oil had drained back. I think it will be fine because the oil level in the pan will be lower while the engine is running.

I do the front end work for JMS motor sports and they've done some turbo 4.6 cars. Naturally I've looked them over 8) . They have plumed into the pan like your talking about. Oil level will be lower while running but crank windage might push oil back up the tube. I would think that building the drain on an angle might fend that off. Ultimately I've no idea cuase I've never done it but see other stuff that I thought I'd share.
