low boost with he351

Postby 92strokersmoker » Fri Apr 15, 2011 11:53 pm

I just clocked my turbo tonight after running it with the wastegate and a boost elbow gettin 35-38lbs. Now that I reclocked and went with 3 inch IC tubes, I can only MAX at like 20-21. I wired the wastegate also. Kinda not liking this low of boost seeing as how it seems more boggy and EGTs run significantly higher (i can peg 1200 in 3rd where before Id be lucky to get 800) I thought about taking my star wheel back down to get more fuel with less boost but that dont fix my high egt numbers or low boost. What can or should i do. Any MAJOR problems with welding the wastegate shut other than not being able to use it again? Ill be checking my boots for leaks tomorrow. But I want that 35lbs back!

Sounds like a leak.

Yup, BILTIT's got it.

I don't know how those housings clock, but on my S300 the bolts rattled loose that hold the compressor housing on and I had a boost leak around it. Talk about hard to find.

Also, plugging /weldingthe WG is not a band-aid for boost loss in a setup already proven to make boost. If you have a leak it will make it WAY easier to overspeed the turbo. The turbo will have to work way harder to supply pressure, and if it can't be made the exhaust pressure will overspeed it.

Think Id be able to weld on new mounting brackets to keep the WG setup i had before on this without damaging the turbo?

Don't get me wrong, if you already had it wired, it should be ok for testing, but you need to find the boost leak first. Running a truck with a boost line open to atmosphere will cause the turbo to overspeed, since the compressor has no pressure to resist it's spinning. While a boost leak isn't as bad, it's still technically possible.

You fix the leak and running it wired shut shouldn't be a problem.

When I wired mine shut I got the lever backwards. The wastegate was wide open! Got it right and now it rips!

I took off the turbo to inspect it before checkin leaks. Found that the waste gate wasnt wired tight enough and still had room to open. Re wired it shut and jumped up to 30psi if im full in it. WAY more giddy up. Im pretty sure im back to where i was before clocking it. Some how I still think its kinda low for a he351. But then again i may not have a big enough injector.

pretty close to the same setup I have, and same boost, so I would say its where it should be.
