twins question

Postby k5runner » Thu Aug 25, 2011 8:12 am

Okay so after diving my truck for a little, I realize that I want more. Right now my truck, a 92 Extra Cab Long bed (that used to be a 2x4) has a Denny-T fuel pin, a SuperDuty IC, 5x.012's, Advanced the timing ~3/8", A HXsuper 40, 4" DP to 5" Exhaust. It's backed by a now broken Chevy NV4500, and a Ford 205 T-case. Also a HP ford 60 and a Chevy 14 bolt, both with Lockers I run 4.10's with 37's.

Its good for what it does now. I towed ~10K up the cajon pass at 60mph, at 26 psi, at 1100*. I feel like my gearing is perfect for my tire size. So not to bad but I'm going to add a slide in camper or get a toybox so that 10K could easily go to 15K or more. So I want more power.

I think that my motor now makes about 250-300, so making 400 or more is where I want to be. There is a few things that I already have and/or will get like. I have the 3200rpm spring that I will install, along with the KDP that I will deal with. I have all the part #'s for the higher volume lift pump and parts, that will also get installed. All the cooling stuff will be dealt with (new water pump and hoses, and will have a shop go threw the radiator). I'm thinking of getting my pump turned up or even have bigger plungers/pistons installed. Also I know that I need bigger injectors but don't know just how much bigger.

I feel like I should be able to make 400+ HP form my VE pump for less money than it would take to make 400+HP form a P-pump (because I would have to buy everything to convert to P-pump).

And then the big question. Twins. Do I stick with the super40 and add another? Can I use the HC1? Or do I need to get two others? I can fab up all the tubes and brackets. I'm not afraid of that, I just don't know which turbos to get. I'm also leaning towards more to Stock application turbos, not aftermarket to keep costs down. Remember, if I had the money I would just go buy a new truck, not a 19 year old truck. Would a S400 and my super40 work good together?

Oh and the the trans is going to be replaced with a Spicer ES066-7B a seven(7) speed truck tranny. Rated at 65000 lbs I'm in the process of finding all the little parts. It has a SAE#2 bellhousing and 6th 1:1 with a .74 7th, (4500 has a .75) so my gearing will still be where I want it. So I'm not worried about the trans holding up.

Thanks, Jack.

I would get a S400 based turbo for the low pressure and the Super for the high pressure. So get a 2nd Gen kit for twins and you find the turbo good for you to put on.

For a 400hp VE, get a good electric lift pump or a 2nd Gen piston lift pump with a regulator. Or spend the big bucks (not much more than a low pressure piston lift pump for 1st gens) and get a Airdog or FASS.

By K5, is this in a Chevy or Dodge? :bom:

You could do a HX40 over HT3B.

Its in a 92' Doge extra cab that used to be 2X4. I bought the truck to swap the motor into my Chevy, but it was sooooo clean that I decided to keep it.

Whats the max/minimum fuel pressure for the VE? I have a bunch of part #'s for the "better" lift pump for the VE motors. I got off of this forum.

You can buy the whole upgrade kit here:

http://www.dieselautopower.com/product_ ... 20pump.htm

Minimum ideal is 5psi in my opinion, max of about 20psi.

I was going to the Hammers, for the big race.

And it is a crawler, it has 4.88's, lockers, 203/205, 465, 16" coil overs F/R, 4-link rear, and 3-link front. Buttttttt, it also has a 650HP EFI 496, so we can pass the sand rails in Glamis. The pics were taken on the way to Pismo.

Its my all around fun truck. And it doesn't suck.

I think that I'm going to install the 366 spring, and the newer lift pump and try to do some tuning of the pump first. I guess that my super40 is not working at its best just yet. It only boosts less than 30psi. I guess its good for 40-45psi. So a little tuning might help a bunch.

I picked my 2nd gen lp up on ebay for $75 and found a mallory regulator on craigslist for $80, then go to your nearest Case IH dealer for the lp to filter tubing, $30ish as opposed to the Cummins $60, the spacer and gasket at Case as well, Ive got mine set at 15psi at idle and it jumps to 17psi at WOT
