propane or hx40 upgrade for towing

I'm currently running a 92 non intercooler, 5 spd getrag, 4wd dually, with guages. Have opened up the air box. I had to turn down the pump some egt's where out of control even running empty, 1200+ on grades. Egt's are now manageable but still dictates some shifting. It has a 3" dp going to a stack box with 5" stacks. I am looking to make this into a reliable work truck that will tow daily 15k. What I have read so far is a Hx40 might be a good and quick upgrade. But also see propane injection could give me a real boost too. The propane would be a quick (couple hour job) I'm not sure but the turbo might be a more lengthy project and would assume I would need to intercool it at the same time. I would diffently change to a 4" dp with the new turbo. This truck doesn't make me money if it is sitting the shop so looking for a quick turn around. Would greatly appreciate any insight to this problem.

A 92 with no intercooler? What gives?

Sorry should have explained more. This is a mutt truck, due to rust and worn out parts in the past. I believe the frame is an 89, the cab is a 92 (no rust at all ) the motor was worn out and the previous owner found a low mileage replacement. Not sure why they didn't have the intercooler parts on the cab. Also, I have looked at meth/water injection but that doesn't look practical I average 200 miles a day.

I suggest turning the power down to stock. Adding more power is only going get you into further downtime.


I would look into a water/meth injection. Simple install and reliable.

Propane is fuel. Why do you think it will help give power but not raise EGT's?

4" full exhaust, an HX40, and water injection will be all you need for a Non-IC'd truck.

Just from what I have read it only raise egt's slightly. After doing more and more research I am leaning toward what you have suggested. Hx40, 4 inch dp and water injection will be a good combination. Still looks like I might be going through alot of methanol/water solution and looks like methanol is not cheap. The propane injection looks like it could become a pain in always having to find a propane place. Atleast with m/w injection you can just add it yourself. Thanks for you input. Hard to find good information on the best combination on making an old cummins a reliable tow rig. Seems like most post are about biggest and baddest not the most practicable.

If you go the HX40 route, get a Super40. The Super40 part number is 4031450 from Turbo Supply. The Super40 is just a stock turbo from a certain year of 6CT Cummins. Now with water/methanol, I see that as just one more tank to refill. The 50/50 stuff is expensive and if I understand the science, the water just cools the methanol burning and doesn't really help EGTs. Windshield washer fluid is maybe 20?% methanol and that'll cool better or you could run 100% water.

Bring on the water in stages of 10, 15, 20, 30psi or get the snow kit with EGT control. I do not like the snow method of straight EGT control as it can bring on the water before boost hits. Without boost, I do not see the water staying in a vapor state.

I agree on if it ain't broke! but with the high egt's and pulling on the time it is time to tweak it with out being stupid!

If it is smaller than a 1.1 A/R or 16cm exhaust housing, then yes, wastegate.

HX40, 4" Down pipe and a home made water injection would be a great system for you. Water alone will obviously cool and also add power. The cooling effect will make more dense oxygen and dense oxygen equals more power. (or better use of the fuel anyways) also around here the done up tractors spray water in the exhaust manifold to create steam and they can spool a bigger turbo. Therefore, big turbo and high egts means heat and then steam, water to steam expansion rate is something like 300%. which means insanely fast spool up. I am not sure on the reliability of spraying water into your exhaust manifold though. I am going to play with this idea later this summer.

will you tow 15k or gross 15k? wm helps for sure. cab over, car trailer with sleds , fuel , whatever, around 15k grossed. right at 1200-1300, on 7-8% at 50-60mph. i m maybe 3/4 turn from stock, with everything in the sig, having a 50/50 mix makes a huge difference. if you are going to be actually towing 15k, you will need an intercooler, spray wont keep up on its own. what r&p are you running?

sorry, don't know what "r&p" stands for.

I gross out around 25k, 14k skid loader, trailer, and truck, trailer is a 20ft with 2ft beaver equipment trailer. Have called turbo exchange/supply, a new Hx40 super $795 out the door with exchange even though my turbo is not an hx40. Looks like I'm a going to go this route hopefully by next week, along with 4in dp and water/meth. After that I will see what the egt's are and then see if I have to add IC.
