towing twins

im in the market for towing as i can reach 1300* egt easily when towing 10k up a slight grade. i really like what AHineman did in his setup but that's way to much money for me. i was thinking maybe a s300 and the stock turbo or hx35. as of now i would like to stay on the lower side of boost as o ringing the head and studs aren't in the budget.

for the s300 i was thinking a 64/65/12, what about a 64/71/12(does that sound right?)

a hx50 and what 35 or stock turbo?
the only reason i was thinking s300 is that way possibly latter down the line when i actually do twins i could just get a s400 like you did.

Well, I'd personally rather have something with a gate for the secondary, but others have had success without. I don't know of any turbo that would be a good primary now and then a good secondary later in a normally sized twin setup. The problem with the S300s you see for use as singles is the exhaust wheels and housings are too small to allow for good use as a primary. BD's towing twin setup used an s300g over a 66 or so mm s300, but the exhaust side was bigger than what you normally see, like a T4 1.10 AR or something. The s475 you posted a link for is what I used for a primary as well, but I got it from http://www.turbosupply.net/ for $552 plus shipping a couple of years ago. It's part number is 171702. The S300g I got was $749 plus shipping at the time, IIRC. Part number 174430. Both of them together were less money than most S300 singles.

The 171702 has a 1.32 housing on it and housing options for it seem to be limited. I know there's a 1.10 housing made for it, because I've seen new ones with them on it, but I can't really find a distributor that seems interested in getting me one.

I'll keep digging around, but I think the 1.32 might be a bit big for a stockish-fueled truck.

I thought those 1.10 housings were modified to fit the 171702, but IDK. The cost is a lot more for those as well. That's why a smaller primary sounded like a good idea for towing.

Honestly, there's nothing wrong with keeping the HX35. An S400 will feed it just the same as it would an S300. It's just that towing twins are usually an extremely fast spooling setup, and I figure that an S400 of any size would kind of ruin that aspect...

its got ddp stage 2 injectors, and im thinking of doing a LP lift pump or airdog.
@hineman wha if i ran the s300 that you used as a single and then a s475?
im not objective to a hx at all but i just have been reading more on s300/400 setups

Hineman's secondary would be a fine single for as long as you needed. I'm sure it moves air as good, if not better, than the HX35 and it spools just as fast.

The s300g is supposed to flow about like an hx super 40 (in the neighborhood of 870 cfm or so is what I've seen). I've never ran it as a single, but most people that have say it doesn't take much to get things hot with it when you start adding fuel. The wastegate and exhaust side flows better on the s300g than the hx35 though. I picked it because it was supposed to spool really fast, was cheap, tough, and I could step up to a better secondary later and still use the same piping.

On a side note, if you never plan on adding more fuel, you could get away with a single turbo and never have to worry about twins or egts. Maybe a 62/65/14 or so. Cheaper in the long run, but not as much fun.

when it gets twins it will get more fuel but for now i just need that little bit more.

for a few $ more there are much better options than the s475 74.6/96/1.32 T6 for twins.

you can get the following that will spool much faster in either T4 or T6. I am going to use a 57mm / 74.6/83/ 1.10 AR

71/83/ .90, 1.0, 1.10, 1.25
74.6/83/ .90, 1.0, 1.10, 1.25

Turbine housings are less than $200 if you want to change them and they are direct from BW, not cut up and chopped from some 3rd party.

We do a lot with turbos. Give us a call. I would recommend a 62/65/12 over the Dtech 64
