Serious COmpound Turbo Talk

I know lately I been posting a lot, and most of it just stuff to bring up so other people know its out there and to see if anyone else is doing it but I am starting this so I can get a idea of what I need to get and how to build.

I plan on running a compound system on my Cummins once its installed. I am going to buy a HX35, and mod the crap out of it to be my 2nd stage or compressor turbo. From there I want to run a big turbo off a semi, mainly one off a CAT3406. Now to explain I am a die hard CAT fan, so die hard I own some manuals on CAT engines and I got what I need. But I want to ask if a CAT 3406 turbo would be to big for a atmosphere/1st stage turbo? I dont see why it shouldn't but I will not claim to be a expert.

Now on that not you need fuel to light them up. I have heard of guys running Ag/Off Road P-Pumps and VP44's to make more power. Is there any AG/Offroad VE Rotary pump that could be used to squeeze more power? I figure if there was a off road pump that could be modded more then the stock one, it would be worth getting and swapping.

And I am up for reading on the subject if I can find more info on injectors being used and other things. So hope this sparks some good discussion where we all learn a little!

An Ag or offroad doesn't make more power, it helps to keep the fuel going under a given load for competition sports. It actually is a smaller pump. They just use the governor from it.

Now, to size turbos properly, you really want a turbo that flows 2x as much air per CFM as the HX35.

Cat engine number mean nothing to me. I really need to know if it is a Schwitzer, Holset, Garret, etc and the model number. Then we can find a turbo map and get the proper turbo.

Is it my imagination, or does CAT use their own brand of turbos sometimes? I know the Lexion at work has "CAT" cast into the compressor housing and I think it has a CAT P/N on the tag. I haven't poked around under the hood of the semis too much... yet

Yep,oldest truck I've seen one in is a 82 359 pete. That thing is weird thou,it freaks me out cuase its got an air kill on it. Got a rattle or knock when cold-no air-ruined engine

As far as I know Cat has always farmed there turbos out. It does have a Cat part number and Cat in the housing but it is still a supplier just putting Cats name on it. Dont take this as the gospel but its what I have seen since working for Cat.

We've got quite a few 3406 and 3412 turbos laying around here that I could try to get some wheel sizes off of, but I wouldn't get your hopes up for turbine specs. They've been rode hard and thrown away busted.

I also wouldn't even look at a Cat parts book to find a new turbo. You'll have twice as much tied up in just the bare center section as you would just buying a cookie-cutter S400.

Also, Zach, we're still waiting on a quote on a Certified on our 980C.

I know that the turbo should flow twice the amount as the one behind it. And anyone got some good sizes I could work off of? I am trying to freshin up and learn more. I want to run a Modded HX35 as my 2nd stage and a S400 or something of the like for my 1st stage. And here is something interesting you guys may like.

Throw it on there and see what happens! Big injectors should help spool it.

Funny how cat naming it an "intercooler" (between stages) and aftercooler (after both stages) makes sense, most other semi guys call anything after the turbo an Aftercooler

That's actually the correct terminology. The Cummins engine designation for our trucks is 5.9BTA (5.9ltr, B series, turbo-charged, aftercooled).
