used he351cw

Postby dunes450r » Mon Jan 14, 2013 7:41 pm

so i remembered reading this:
cmann250 wrote:If an HE351 is what you want, get good pics of it and look it over well before you buy it. Guys will beat on them and run them hot. Common Rails are the new hot rod, so finding a good, fairly priced one has posed problems for other people.

i have a gutbag with 3.07s, currently have PODs but 5x14's should be happening soon, plus an intercooler. i found a used 351cw on craigslist, claims to have 65k on it, and not too many with a chip(who knows of course) i offered $200 for it.

main thing i'm asking is:
are 351cw's really that great of a turbo (better than a GDS 60mm upgrade with a 12cm WG hot side)?

if he says he'll take 2 for it, anything in particular to look for other than the normal shaft play etc?

what goes bad in these turbos when their hot rodded with a chip, lots o fuel and high egts?

craigslist ad is off the coast, and the turbo reflects that with oxidation: anyone see something i can't?

Ive never had the 60mm upgrade, but i had the hx-35 before i switched to the 351 and the 351 made a big difference in temps. Used to have to let off because of 15 to 1600 degree temps, but now it hardly ever goes past 1400, and i dont know if you can find a turbo that will spool up faster for the money.

Check the turbine before you buy it. The exhaust housing on these is easy to get off.

When running the getrag the 351cw is THE turbo to have, enough said.

He351+timing = hg failure
In my opinion id do the 60mm upgrade they support same hp and drive pressure isnt as much of a issue with h1c 60mm upgrade

You need to be more specific on how much timing. I have the timing stock and run the M&H spacer and no issues with 40psi boost yet.

You need to have more empirical data before putting out a statement as blank as that.

LOL.... he told you Kyle.

Anyways, the he351cw is a better turbo than the 60 upgrade. The 60 upgrade is a nice turbo and does support a decent amount of power. They do not however have much less drive pressure than the 351, they have a slightly larger exhaust housing, but don't have any larger of an exhaust wheel. ALSO THE 351 HAS A UNDIVIDED HOUSING, there fore helps with drive pressure and does in fact slow down spool time over a divided housing.

The 351 loves to blow head gaskets when one is moving a decent amount of fuel and especially with lots of timing. Now no one can put a number on the timing, because timing is completely relevant to a lot of things going on in any given set up.

We can all give approximates of when a head gasket will blow, but it is a complete crap shoot. Heck, even tire size and gearing play a roll in cylinder pressures. 40 psi with a 351 is pushing our head gasket limits. You'll probably be fine, even with the spacer at stock timing. If you go spacer plus anything at all you're probably gonna lose the head gasket. Also if one has a manual transmission, it will affect it as well. The more load on the motor, the more the timing, and the more restriction = high cylinder pressures.

Back to the original post..... Just look for in/out play and excessive side to side play. These turbos are incredibly strong and tough.... Mine has been beat on very hard and is in extremely good shape with well over 250,000 miles.

cmann250 says thank you for this useful post. I never understood WHY people raved about them so much. But the fact remains, I'm a cheap ass and wouldn't give more than $100 for a used stock turbo  Still, I know CR guys. Check the turbine ;)

They are getting fairly expensive, because us 1st genners want them. I looked a long time (6+ months) and bought one for $240 shipped with over 200.000 miles on it. I'm a cheap ass too.... plain and simple.
