more power when cold

Postby captmatthew1 » Sat Feb 16, 2013 8:18 am

over the last little while, i have noticed my truck has a lot more get up and go than when it is warm.

when cold the thing rolls a bit more coal, and pushes me into the seat, but when warm it slightly hazes and gives me a mediocre push.

anyone else experience this? what should i look for?

Cooler denser air will always produce more power. I would still check the intercooler and all boots though.

its a huge difference. more than i think the cold air would make. i will check the boots, since i think they were starting to crack. any other suggestions?

Your h/r might be seeing some wear (same symptoms as a lower idle when warm)..... do you experience this?

Also, your timing si being advanced when cold (assuming your ksb is doing it's job)...... to test this advance your timing about 1/4" and see if you regain your cold engine power.

idle stays the same when warm. i had my timing advanced but moved it back a while ago from 1/8. i will bump it 1/4 and see how it does.

How clean is the IC? The dirtier they are, the quicker they get heatsoaked. I use powder sunlight laundry soap, dump a bunch on the back of the ic, and pressure wash it through. This will require removal of course..it will come way cleaner with the soap, gets the bug slime out.

Wouldn't explain moving more fuel when cold (more smoke). Timing would, because one can lay more "coal" with more timing, at low rpm, until the turbo spools.

It is like tuning for one altitude, then moving to another. Up here in AK, we have some pretty extreme density altitude changes. The effects can be dramatic.
