Postby 89silverbullet » Sat Apr 19, 2008 5:01 pm

i did the diaphram turning mod to start the whole modification process. well under full throttle it does not dump a black cloud its more of a white haze  . is this good or bad? any advice is appreciated.

Did you turn it to the deepest side of the cone or just "turned" it? Check and make sure you did not knock off your ksb wire...

all i did was take the fuel line off and take the top off and turn it 90 degrees. it runs fine but the haze is weird only under full throttle.

Lack of black smoke isnt bad in and of itself- it indicates a properly tuned diesel engine. I absolutely HATE it when people say that a diesel isnt making power if it isnt smoking. That is SOOO 1960s N-A diesel. Mine doesnt smoke (no more than a grey wisp at low RPM), and it has plenty of power and torque for no more than I've done to it.

The white haze is likely a timing or injector issue, neither of which is hard to aleviate. Injctors probably could use a clean and reset ($10-15 apiece), and timing checked at the same time.

I would suggest taking that diaphragm out and looking at the fuel cone. When I did this mod to mine I noticed a good power increase, then I did it to my friends and he lost power. So I pulled his completely out and looked at it. Come to find out his was not in the stock position, so we marked the high sloping side of the cone and put it back in positioned for the most possible fuel. That guys brothers cone was not where it should have been either...

Take it out and look at it.

Mine did the same thing, once you turn in the fuel screw it'll smoke black ;)

JQ, In that write up you said the same thing "Turn 180*" or somehting like that.. Have you ever even pulled the stupid fuel pin out of that pump? I have never seen a truck loose or not gain any power/smoke. YOU HAVE TO PULL THE DARN PIN TO KNOW! Sorry for the rant, this is one of the most painful issues for me for some stupid reason.

Yeah! You can't just turn it willy-nilly 20,45,90, degrees. No 2 trucks are the same. You have to look and see where the deepest part of the cone is and turn to that point.

For me, turning it 90 put it on the deepest setting, and yes I checked. In the article I explained that rotating the diaphragm will set the eccentric to the deepest setting, and inferred that if someone really wanted to check, they could just pull the pin and look. You're right I should have actually said to pull the pin out and double check to make sure. The truck now has an aftermarket pin in it. Honestly I don't think rotating the diaphragm did much, maybe 10hp.

Deepest side to the radiator. While you're there, grind it down a bit and polish it.
