a-1000, 6x .018's and n2o install

Postby Cschafer » Sun May 11, 2008 10:47 am

Finally got the fuel system and injectors installed. I built a fuel cell for the bed to get rid of the tank. 3/4npt to an-12 to the pump -8 line from the pump to fs1000 filter and -8 line into the bypass regulator from the regulator to the pump is -6 line. The return is 3/8 hose with a tee in it to pick up the ip and injector return on the way back to the cell.
I'd say the truck picked up about 15 hp just from the fuel system. I can't get the fuel pressure below 19 psi though do guys think it's making that much pressure on the 3/8 return line and is that to much for the untouched front seal?

Installed the edm's this morning  . The boost goes past the wastegate to about 46 and it burrys the pyro in a good 35 to 70 run. Smokes like a freight train at wot and never clears up but is suprisingly clean to just drive through town.

So hear are some questions. First I'd say the power is real close to 400 say between 380-410. It doesnt pop or crackle at all in the higher rpms say 3200 but it starts defueling at about 2900. The gov. spring and timing are stock. I'm going to install the spring but what rpm is considered safe with out 60lb springs? Timing is another issue, first I'm already flirting with head gasket failure and I love the torque this thing is making. How far should I jump the timing.

Then we come to the nitrous kit I bought. I'm assuming this will make the head gasket go in a hurry but what does it do for egts, the same or less is fine but I don't want any more. The kit is just a -3 line to the NOS 1602 solenoid with 1/8 copper tubing to a 1/8npt fitting. I figure with no jet it's probobly good for 100 maybe 125 hp shot witch I have the fuel for but what do you guys think about the head gasket and turbo problems.
Turbo is a 62/65 .80ar s300
TIA

sorry for the long post but it should get some good descussions going.

you need more air, my twins clean up the smoke in my truck but i know there not getting enough fuel because of the 12mm
nitous should lowwer etgs, an dmake the head go faster, with a head torqued to 125 i hit 50psi a few times with out an issue and the stock head gasket is fine
i ran 30psi before i blew the front seal in my pump out
so 19 is fine,

post some pics on the bed tank i want to do the same thing

Yeah I need more air but I don't want to spend the money on the s400 right now. I was hoping to just use the bottle to make some numbers for right now but it's already overrunning the wastegate so it looks like o-rings are next.

Good to know on the front seal and I'll get some pix's soon.

Anybody got any advice on the timing?

You had me til I seen the nitrous lol. Without 60lb springs, safe is to about 3500rpm give or take.

I thought you were gonna run the 5-15psi boost referenced regulator? I would keep the around town, no boost pressure below 15psi or 16psi. That's when you pop the seal out, when the pump doesn't need all the fuel, and you're pounding it with 19+psi  . Under full load I'm sure you can cram 70psi into the VE and the seal won't go. But keep in mind, not all pumps or engines are the same or react in the same manner.

Time to move on past junior high, install that governor spring already.

Timing bump, since you've got a nonIC'd motor, you're already bumped higher than IC'd, so try only a 1/16" instead of the 1/8" everyone says. Or if you need to do a kdp and front seal, while you're in there, bump the pump gear a tooth, then retard the pump all the way or leave it a hair below the stock position.

If you plan on spinning it over 3k regularly, put the 60 lb springs in. Better to be safe than sorry. I think it's cheap insurance. I'm almost as cheap as Bill, and I paid the $110 for springs.

Nitrous is weird. I have just enough fuel to make it run hot, and with a .070 jet my egts went from 1600-1700 to 1200-1300 or so on 0-90mph runs. If you are waaaay overfueled, nitrous can actually make your egts go up, but eventually if you spray enough egts will go back down as the mixture leans out. I'd worry about the h/g before anything else, and with a small nitrous system I wouldn't worry about the turbo, just activate it at 20-30psi or more.

found some more in her today. My half inch rubber floor mat worked it's way underneath the go pedal. Definently got stronger and boost is now 49 to 50  . I have the 60lb springs on the 2nd gen head that's waiting to get o-ringed but would like to keep it below the limit to save a few horses with the stock springs since peak power is under 3200 anyway.

Bill, Spring is probobly going in this week. I'm just debating wither to leave the afc lever in or not when I do it. Gonna try to get the boost down first. Dunbar's dyno is going to be at Merchant's event I believe and I plan on runnin it. I got the boost reference regulator that has two springs one for 3-20 and 20-60, have the small spring in it but with the adjustment all the way out it's still making 19 :?

So on the wastegate HTT said it was preset to 40, can I back it down to start opening earleier to try and get it back down to 40 or so ? I'm asuming that you make the shaft longer to make it come in learlier, is that correct?

I turned to the wastegate rod out about 4 threads and didn't really seem to make a difference still spikes 48 to 50 in 3rd, 4th and 5th. Slipped the clutch last night also so I guess no more drag racing for me untill I get the twin disk rebuilt. Kinda sucks no one can build a sigle disk that can hold this thing. I'm not easy on it by any means but I don't ride it or slip it either. It just can't handle the shifts.

Put eletric fans on it yesterday too to get rid of the propeller out front. Twin fans came out of a 99 ford contour fit like they were built for it. We'll see if they keep it cool. I don't tow anything so it should be ok.

Thanks for the info guys.

how long is your -6 return?

are you sure you didnt mix the springs up?

tank in bed makes you wonder why the factory ever did it that way huh?

return line is about 10-12 ft of 3/8 rubber line. I think i figured out why the pressure is high though I have the return going in the bottom of the tank into the same baffle that if picks up from. Fuel pressure goes up and down with the level of the fuel in the tank due to changing amount of back pressure. It doesnt get over about 19psi though and the seal is still in it so I think it will be ok. Ya know what they say about hindsight

Tank is nice to work on and now I have a guage of sorts but I can see some issues with loading a 4x8 piece of sheeting :D

a return that long should be 1/2" and get dumped into the top of the tank

that would be if all it was returning was the pump

yours is doing the ip return and inj return as well so maybe 3/4?

yes, it takes up space, but sure runs better huh?

ps - what is a nos 1602 solenoid? never heard of that one. no jet is not the way to go. if you have .125 line after a solenoid that is smaller than that (and your is) then the valve is also the jet and the nirous is expanding in the 1/8" line. that might be a good thing tho...(losing some of the nitrous effeciency) cuz a 125 hole is pretty big

N.O.S. part number 1602 power shot solenoid, can't find the orfice measurment but says for 175 hp shot. I've decided to run jets of some sort with two stages and and external wastegate. What do you guy's think of a needle valve for adjustment just before it hits the intake. It would be pretty sweet for tuning. Don I hear yeah on the expansion after the valve but ya think it will mess with that much pressure?

Any updates on your set-up? I'm trying to decide if the 62mm is the right turbo for me or go to the 64mm. Do you like your spool up. I will be running the same injectors as you and have the heavy pump mods. What alltitude are you at?

I love the 62 for spoolup. Found some end play in it today though so not sure on the longgevity. I was gonna do a twins setup though and use it for a top. With your set up it should spool even better but I would go with the 71mm ex wheel and 14cm housing to keep it a little cooler.
