AFC lever removal

Postby gear jammer 91" » Wed Jul 23, 2008 4:50 pm

If I remove the AFC lever from my pump and re-install the pin it rides on, would it have any negative affects on the pump that would cause me not to be able to re-install the afc lever latter on? I want the extra power for the dyno, and the strip, but I want controllable egt's, and decent mileage for normal driving and towing. Also if the afc lever is removed could you just take a couple turns out of the full power screw to get the mileage and lower egt's back? Basically I want wicked power, when I want it, and good mileage when I don't.

Since nobody knows, has anbody removed their AFC lever instead of grinding it?, and do the little ball bearings still seal the pin in after you've removed them, or does their fit in the pump top start to loosen up?

being that you have a manual trans you will prolly never put it back in but yes you could and no, your balls wont leak

you can put some j-b weld or green loctite on them if you are paranoid

you are gonna like it too much to ever reinstall

or, you could build a valet system using a ground foot afc with a longer pin and a solenoid

Any more specific idea on how to do that? I've been thinking about a servo or solenoid controlled valet on the actual lever for a while...

I just tapped the holes with a 1/4-20 and ran in some small set screws with locktite. Worked slick and reinstall would be a cinch.

I want to do this mod to the '89.
Will removing the AFC lever give you more fuel than just removing the fuel pin?
If you remove the AFC lever, you need to keep the pin that rides on the fuel pin in there to plug the hole right?

Thanks

How bad does removing the AFC affect mileage?, is the answer, you don't want to know. I think I still use my truck for commuting to much to take a big mileage hit in the name of more power. I quess I could just get some good rain gear and ride my KTM year round. Of course around here you damn near need a snorkel in the winter cause it rains so much.

It's not the afc you need to worry about it's your right foot. Grinding just a little off the foot like a 1/16 to an 1/8 gave me almost 10lb boost moore, and i even backed the fuel screw off a 1/4 turn close to run away.

My right foot tends to get pretty heavy, especially on freeway on ramps.
Maybe I'll get bored this weekend and remove it and see what I think.

It's in the top of the pump cover. Read through the 3200rpm install and where he points out the afc foot to grind, just remove the whole lever. A small punch knocks it right out.

search 'case pressure gauge' - the pump is lubed and cooled by fuel, hows your supply system?

it adds power everywhere - only down fall is that as soon as you come off idle pump thinks you are at max boost (ie fat)
