Muffler?

Postby xpetecx » Mon Jun 08, 2009 3:32 pm

So I got pulled over by the law women the other day, and she says Ive got to put a muffler back on my truck. Anyone have a recomondation? I would like some sort of performace muffler. Ive still got most of the original exhaust on there.

Better yet any one know of a good place to get a whole system? I would like to move up to a 4 in.

Does any one know if pinnacle power exhaust is still around? I think it was out of wyoming. I had a system of theirs on my 2nd gen and it was awsome. Went on like a big lego kit, lasted forever, looked great till the day I sold the truck. The best part was the price, I think it was like $280.

That's what I did. My friend made me one out of stainless with no baffels on the inside and it passed.

I put a dynomax http://summitracing.com/parts/WLK-24217/
but mine was 5" on my 05. Can't say it did much to make it quiet but it made the police happy and helped reduce the drone. As a bonus they are pretty cheap.

In Iowa, if the law officer makes the decision its too loud(regaurdless of the presence of a muffler), then they will make you put it back to stock. They have the power, but usually don't use it. You have to have something rediculously loud, and run it alot to get them to do this. Think small block chevy, headers, and 12" glasspacks that are burned out.

I've been running my straight pipe for years, and only had one complaint on the exhaust. It was right after I got pulled over for racing, speeding, no seatbelt, no insurance, and my 4 year old son in the truck. Somehow I did not get a ticket that day..........

MMILLER I agree, In Maine it is up to the officer on noise. 10 different cops have 10 different ideas on what is to loud. The guy that bought an 89 I had was in town with a single stack with straight pipe. He took off from a stop pretty easy and 2 cops were walking down the sidewalk. A friend of his overheard the cops saying that they would be putting a stop to that " LOUD" truck. He took the hint and put on a dynomax I had gave him. I had my 93 out and got pulled over for 5 over. He asked me to turn off the truck cause it was to loud. At that time I had a complete stock system with factory muff. Then you turn around and a harley goes through and sets off every car alarm around and no issue.

Harley riders have served their time, as far as I'm concerned.

My dads' (all three of them...) have plenty of stories about police harassment in the 70's and 80's regarding bikes. Apparently it was halfway through Reagan's presidency that you could ride by a cop on a chopper without getting pulled over by default in certain parts of the country.

Personally, I can't stand loud exhaust. I keep big ole' earmuffs ready for anything from mowing the lawn to doing A/C tests on cars with straight pipes.

They just passed a bylaw in our town restricting the use of jake brakes and straight pipes on any motorcycles. They also gave a thumbs up to the local police to use thier own judgement on any other vehicle that they feel is to loud. I`m frowned upon at the local coffee shop. I stopped going through drive threws. I leave the truck idle and go inside for my coffee now !

As far as Jake brakes. I use mine even if the town has an rule against it. I think in court it would be a hard case for them to say not to use a factory safty devise. For you guys that drive big trucks you know how important it is to have your service brakes cool if you really need to stop. I have yet to be stopped for my engine brake. We have a few towns around that do not allow.

I had a DNA muffler on for a while. I ended up going straight pipe instead. I gained nothing but noise. My truck had some sort of after market system on it, had 3 inch down pipe with 4 inch after that. Went to a DNA muffler and it helped quite a bit with performance change. Put on a 4 inch downpipe, and lost 50 gegrees egt but no performance. It actually sounded pretty cool, just figured I would try straight pipe one day and never put it back on. Dna has a good throaty sound to it, just not that cummins roar that I have grown to love. Great muffler, little pricey, but its high flow, and it is all welded stainless. Summit carries them.

Yeah, it burns my ass that Joe Harley Rider doesnt need a muffler, and can step on the throttle up a hill, and bust everyone's ear drums within a city block, but *I* have to have a muffler on my pickup.

They have no right to gripe about harassment, IMO- most of it is self-inflicted by examples stated above. That, and they weave in and out of traffic, pass between cars or on the shoulder, etc, etc. To the 35 decent riders who DONT drive like hot-shots or stupid inbreds, I apologize.

Why cant Harley riders just go down the road peacefully like the other 75% of us do?
