can someone set me straight on stacks?

Postby Swaggs » Fri Jul 24, 2009 1:31 am

I dont know where to post this question. I posted in BODY, but had no responses. I want to do a 5 inch single stack and am wondering if anyone who has something similar has any problem with exhaust coming into the cab when they have their rear slider open? I know when i have leaves or any other crap in the bed it cant wait to get in through that window... thanks!

I can't speak from experience, but from what I have read, if the pipe is right at cab level, or a little below, it isn't uncommon for a little soot to come in the cab.

If the stack is a little bit above the cab, I don't think the smoke would enter the cab.

The type of stack might also make a difference. What kind are you looking to do?

If you want to keep your hearing and sanity put the stacks about 1" over the cab. If they are flush with the cab it is LOUD inside.

At the pulls we had here a month or so ago there was a 2nd gen with a cab level stack. The back of the cab was all soot. I have a pic of it someplace, I'll try to post it.

I guess it's a little lower than I remembered!

i have had several setups, 1 inch above the cab is about right, cause it kills sound and your brain is still able to communicate with you, lol... annnd no, i have had to single setups, and never had trouble with any window being open, but i have a single cab, maybe the aerodynamics are a little different for an extended...

I also run a single slant cut 6" stack about 2"-3" above the cab level and have never had any soot/smoke inside the cab through the back window. I do how ever have a ton of soot all over the cab and box lol. Darn rain in the stack problem. Even with a drain hole in the lower 90deg fitting the rain causes the soot to clump together and as soon as you fire it up "WOOOOOFFFFF" all over the truck. Ah well its a beater anyway. lol.

well geez I am just about talked out of putting a stack on there all together.. I have a straight 4 inch now though, and it exits right before the rear passenger wheel.. so on any given day I have 3 silver wheels and 1 black one. best thing to get it off i have found is engine degreaser. Also, that rear passenger tire just blew out on my brother the other day.. wondering if being soaked in soot had anything to do with it

You could sleeve the stack. Run your 3 or 4 inch pipe to the bed, then put the 5, 6 or whatever size stack on a flat flange, which bolts to the bed. The smaller pipe goes in the stack about 6 inches or so, not fastened directly to it. Then when it rains, most of the rain runs down the stack, and drips on the ground.
When starting, it cuts down on black rain alot!

I just bought a 5" strait cut setup with the little flapper on it to cure the rain issue. What height above the cab should I set it at. I was going to get dual 5" but I really like the velocity that is maintained with a single stack. I keep painting pedestrians so I think it's time to get the soot as high as I can get it. Wuddya think

Thats what I did on the 89 I sold. I had a pipe up inside the stack about a foot. It did work good for the rain issue as well as keeps the bottom half of the stack cool so there is no melting or fire issues with stuff in the bed. I would keep the stack as high as possible if you are after quiet in the cab. Shorter means louder in the truck.
