ANYWAYS found this very intersing idea over at the vw forums , i'll do a cut and paste , and post the link .

" I originally got the idea from Mark (the Miser) Sheppard. A picture is worth 1,000 words:
Well, my camera really sucks, so maybe a few other words are necessary...

The timing plug on the end of the injection pump distributor head is an m8 fine thread bolt which conveniently turns out to be 1mm per thread. Thank you Bosch! Anyway, that means that for every 360° of rotation, the bolt screws in exactly 1mm. The parts shown above allow very fast and accurate checking of the timing compared with fitting a dial indicator. It consists of a small disc that separates the 360° into 100 marks denoting 100ths of a mm and a bolt with a pointer installed in it that accurately points to the demarcations on the disc. The disc also happens to be magnetic. Simply rotate the engine by hand to a little bit before timing mark on the injection pump lines up with the line on the bracket. Screw in the pointer bolt by hand until you feel it seat on the end of the plunger. Rotate the disc so that the 0 is being pointed at by the pointer. Then rotate the pointer bolt out three rotations. Rotate the crank to TDC. Rotate the bolt back in noting how far it rotates before bottoming out. Subtract the amount it rotated back in from the 3 rotations out. In other words, if it rotates 2 complete turns back to 0 then the injection pump is currently set to 1.00mm. If it rotates back in 1.94mm, then the timing is currently set to 1.06mm. Very easy, very accurate. Honestly much easier than messing with the dial indicator.
I was thinking that if there were 10 or more folks interested I would work on making the disc solvent-proof and sell the combo along with a very detailed description of procedure for $15 shipped. I'm sure many folks will be able to make their own, but after having gone through the procedure, that's what would make it worthwhile for me. Let me know if you're interested. "
