3k+ rpm vibration

Postby apwatson50 » Fri Nov 06, 2009 3:00 pm

I've got a pretty good vibration when I run the rpm's up to and over 3k. Doesn't matter in what gear, even at idle. I tried running without the fan, vibration is still there, at idle I disengaged the clutch and ran the rpm's up and the vibration is still there.

One thing is that the more load that is on the engine, the vibration seems to start at a lower rpm.

Any ideas? I'm thinking maybe an injector? I'm going to get a heat gun and see if all cylinders are the same temp.

Thanks, Aaron

check your balancer. make sure its not comin apart on you. im not sure if a cummins balancer is like many factory gasser balancers and has the rubber ring inbetween a two piece balancer or not but just a thought.

I just ordered a fluid dampr because of the vibrations in mine. I thought it was from my dual disc hub, it has super hard springs in it. But it has gotten worse and I can see the balancer is not turning true, its off just a little bit. I would check it out. Look at your tensioner, if its moving a lot, a pulley is not straight. That's how I found mine.

It could be the balancer, I'll check, but it is pretty new, probably less than 10k miles.

I think the one other thing I might do is take the belt off completely and rev it up, to completely eliminate all accessories.

If you got a fluid dampr make sure you check your fan clearance. They make a fan spacer to move your fan about 1/2" out away from the dampr so they do not hit each other.

They did not know about it a couple years ago but they do now and I have one on my truck. I just hope they included one for you when it comes or made some kinda change.

Yeah SNOOT, I heard about that right after I ordered it. They ordered me the 92-98 kit with the sensor relocator, not sure about a fan specer though. I am going to have to get a new fan as mine is still bent from the wreck. I might try to straighten it out, but not sure its worth messing with. I'll have to make a spacer for it when I get my new fan and fluid dampr on I guess.
