What size Turbo Housing

Postby BuckHunters92 » Fri Nov 13, 2009 5:35 am

Is there any way to identify the size of your turbo housing without taking it off and looking inside it. I took my truck to a Diesel Performance shop today to see what mods they could do without breaking the bank. Its a 92 W250, auto 4x4, w/intercooler. They drove it and said it spooled up to quickly to have a 21.m. housing. They said there is no way to tell the size without taking it off and looking in it. Is this right, or is there some other way to tell.

With the auto you probably have the 18.5 cm.
With an auto you don't need to re-spool at every shift so that's a pretty good size. Plus it helps keep the egt's down.

92 trucks have a 21cm unless someone has changed it, but I couldn't see someone changing it and not the turbo.

Why not? I did it that way. A newbie starting out doesn't know as much, so that's an easy upgrade. I just wanted quicker spool at 1st. Then I started to learn more and siht happens.

Its fine, it keeps your spool fast. As small as I would run though.

Look on the engine data plate. IF it's a 1351 CPL, it'll likely have a 21cm housing; if it's a 1579 CPL, it'll be a 18.5 stock. They switched CPLs sometime between April and June 92.

And, there is no such thing as "spooling too fast to have a 21cm housing." If the fuel has been tuned right, it can still have some get up and go. Maybe not like Bill's 89, but there are several things that can be done to help spoolup while keeping the turbo and housing the same.

Take a mirror and look on the back side of the housing. It will have an 18.5 or a 21 somewhere on it. That is if it's stock, which is a crapshoot at this point.
