Should I mill off the intake?

Postby lectro_static » Sat Aug 21, 2010 10:49 am

How much will I get if I have the intake runner on the head milled off? Is it worth it for a DD that tows? Anyone know of any write ups on doing it?

I am going to have to do my head gasket soon and want to do everything Im going to do at that time. Any info on it would be great.

I have 2 extra heads now and I'm thinking about doing it to one of them, then twins and a p-pump!

Certinly wouldn't hurt anything, but personally I don't think it is needed. What are you rwhp goals for the truck?

I wish I knew what mine 'could' be! I'd like to see 450 with no heat problems...maybe the intake would help?

I would be happy with 400 at the tires and yes I know people get it without milling the head but I also need usable power and I believe that the stock intake restricts air flow to #5 and #6 and you cant get in there very well to port the head.

Has anyone dyno'd right after doing this so I can get gain numbers? I really like the idea but if it isnt worthwhile the money and time could be spent elsewhere.

Actually its the #1 intake that has a bump that restricts air flow around it.

Yes #1, how does that affect a DD looking for peformance and heat upgrades? I figure it would help flow and egt...not so much power.

#1 has the bump yes but #5 and #6 are the ones that dont get as much air to them, thats why we put the EGT probe on the back side of the exhaust manifold.

Matchew, porting the head make better flow which makes more power IF its done right. I just dont know how much more power this will make.

Has anyone done this to a 1st gen?

I plan on it. A port and polish helps more than anything. I read somewhere on DTR where someone just ported and polished the valve runners (didn't mill the intake) and gained 20hp top end and cooled EGTs 200* around the board.

Have you looked into a Brzezenski (sp?) ported head? They are in WIS. For the money they do pick up quite a bit of airflow and the milling of intake is included with a stage 2 port job. Was around $1250 and I would bet you could pick up 30-50 hp.

If you have lots of fuel some guys can pick up 100-200 hp from a properly ported head.
