Near stock with W/M and Nitrous

Postby theshark » Fri Jan 07, 2011 11:32 pm

Hey whats going on guys. New to the site and fairly new to diesels. Wanted to bounce an idea off of you guys.

I Already have a 550+ hp ls1 car that is a blast and what i race. What I am wanting to build now is a daily driver that can tow the car a few times a year and still be fun.

Seeing that the 1st gens are pretty inexpensive and seem like fun platform i was thinking it my be the ticket. Here was my general Build outline

All the "easy mods" Intake exhaust basic fueling mods. I have a A1000 i can throw on it. Then run a progressive water/meth system and nitrous. Possible depending on the year I get swap to some of the better years injectors and turbo.

This in a 2wd reg cab. Should make "enjoyable" power and not have any egt problems or MPG issues for a daily.

If this was your mod list i would assume a Non/IC would be the best bet right?

Appreciate the help. I am already lurking a lot and checking out the site. Seems like a solid group.

I would get an intercooled model if you can find one. If you want an auto, it's worth the extra gear and intercooler to buy a later model. A good non-lockup converter can still handle over 500 at the wheels.

Is the OD trans as strong and as cheap to build?

What we looking at mpg wise as a difference. Just a ballpark is fine. probably 70/30 city/highway.

i would think 400 is easy to hit right? At under 5000 pounds it should be peppy and fun to play around in. Maybe walk a few mustangs and newer trucks.

The injectors and turbo for 400 hp will cost that much or more. And then you need studs, springs, injection pump parts, lift pump etc..

i was just thinking engine mods ..... ie new injectors , a turbo and bigger lift pump / larger fuel lines and some sort of intercooler and bhaf .

injection pump parts are little more than some sort of govenor spring , grinding the fuel pin and possibly making changes to the dynamic timing in the pump .

the rest of the stuff are things that break from 400 hp :D

you'll definitely want an intercooled model. and i would surely go for the 518. O/D will add close to 2-4 MPGs on the highway, and you can cruise at 65-70 easy. someone's brother on here put like 700hp through a built 518 without it breaking(p-pump)

If you're willing to run w/m and nitrous, I would think 400-500 should be easy to hit. I hit 448 with a converter (727 trans) injectors (6x16) a 60mm turbo upgrade, and a .125 jet. W/M shoulda coulda woulda bumped up that number another 50hp or so. 20 city 30hwy will be a lot harder unless you're willing to drive 50mph on the highway. More like 17/23 I'd say.

The 727 is nice for city driving. If you plan on long highway trips tho, don't get a straight pipe with a stack, your eardrums will hate you.

You guys think it will take that many mods with w/m and spray?

What will the stock 518 hold if its in decent shape with a good converter? What would consider safe? If there is such a thing.

Like I said earlier. I have my race car. i just dig 1st gens and they seem like a fun daily.

On the mileage I was stating I drive a mix of 70/30 city/highway. :D

If i could get 17 babying it in town with the w/m i would be ecstatic. Again something nice reliable and enjoyable when im not in the car.
