Hey JQ,

When are you putting in a 3200 rpm govenor spring? Seems like that would be a good idea since you don't have overdrive. When you write it up don't just say "We had Joe Schmoe at XYZ Diesel put in a new govenor spring" at least give us a few pics of the process. There are still a couple of us who haven't done it yet and would like all the info we can get. Also, be sure to get pics in (I know you're limited on how much you can show in the mag) of which screws get turned on the injection pump (I can find them, but it always helps to see it). Oh, and don't be afraid to implement ideas from the forum that aren't off the shelf. The diesel magazines (yours included, although it is better than the others) tend to just pull parts from a shelf and claim that an exhaust, air filter, and box are the greatest mods ever and you don't need anything else (unless you buy from Banks, then you should get two of everything he sells for your truck, just because). You wanna do this low buck, you're gonna have to get your hands dirty and be creative.

Don't worry, I already have exhaust and intake ideas that will be pennies instead of dollars. The gov. spring looks like it involves taking a lot of the pump apart, so we're going to do that when we put in a fuel pin and 14mm head. Not too far down the road, need a trans and compressor upgrade (or new turbo) first.

Oh and I think the fuel screw article is coming out next month...should be pretty good, has lots of pics, and we tested it 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 turns up from stock to see what made the most power on the dyno. Oddly enough I didn't need to mess with the smoke screw; the truck only smokes when I am trying to make it do so.

imo the spring should be installed now, before you do any afc work and definately before you go 14mm

just my opinion

once you r&r the pump top you are gonna wonder why you ever thought it was a big deal

keep up the good work

don

oh, one thing about the spring - it will change the way the truck runs thru the entire rpm range, not just extend its limit - its a 5 dollar part that these trucks should have came with from the factory. imo

I agree with Tank, do it BEFORE the pump massaging. It is something everyone can do.

and dont waste your time and money with the fuel pin you wont gain much nothing your going to be happy with, you should just remove the afc lever, and i can have the pump top apart and back to geither with a new spring in, in under 10 minuts and maby an extra 5 for removing the afc lever, im not trying to brag but im trying to say its not a big deal, and besides you should do the afc lever if your going to put the 14mm in so you can get the most fuel

two points here...........if, your even considering putting the 14mm head on
there, there is not a big enough up grade. not even the best upgraded HX35 will work

I'm right there with you Flash, I've been meaning to do the gov spring for about 6 months now and haven't done it yet. JQ, as far as fuel pins, grind your own. Take out the factory one and cut it down until the top of the ramp is as thin as it can be and still support the bottom. This will allow plenty of fueling and some AFC control - important in Commiefornia. I'm pretty sure that KTA retained his AFC and so far nobody's topped his HP mark.

you guys gotta remember this is for a mag

the whole thing needs to go in steps

best part of this whole thing is that there will be dyno sheets for ea step

with most vehicles built for mags wasting money is not the end of the world

let em do the 35/40 thing for the mild (low dollar) tune up first - dyno that, then go with the big turbo (or turbos) and more fuel

i am real curious what a low dollar, all out ve cheapo sytle (366 spring, no afc, fuel screw maxed, possibly extended, ksb wired) stock injector motor will make and how much air it would need

don

ps - josh had his truck set up just like that but he still had the 62/71-14 and head work etc

Honestly it is just time. The truck is my daily driver so I can't afford to screw it up. On weekedays I am pulling my hair out trying to write for the magazine, and on weekends latley I have been catching up on some of the stuff I couldn't get done during the week. More pump mods soon, the fuel screw was the easiest, so it was first. I think we're going to try a 14mm from Rocken Tech, which is only like $238, so I think it will be cheap enough that we might as well throw it on when we do the rest of the mods.

are you going to buy a fuel pin or grind you own? i would like to see how to decide how much to grind, rather than just plunk down the cash. somebody said low buck, right?

take it apart one weekend just to see how easy it is

note index mark for throttle linkage (which you will prolly have to change anyway once you get the fuel screw turned the rest of the way in)

dont do the pastor bob way, leave the spring and top hat hooked up to the throttle shaft and push the throttle shaft out the bottom of the pump top (while holding it from underneith). then you can set the pump top aside and deal with the spring/top hat with both hands and everything is in plain view. you are gonna laugh at how simple it is

josh ayers used to keep an extra one in his truck at all times. he installs them in whom ever wants one's truck - who ever he runs into at the gas station, supermarket, what ever. at night, with a flashlite, in about 20 minutes. i think he said most give him 60-100 bucks for doin it but that isnt why he does it. he does it for the look on their face when they test drive their truck
