dont worry about the dub post - WHERE DID YOU HIT WATER?

in the pocket i am guessing

how close to the seat?

(i will be starting on mine as soon as it is tanked and mag'ed)

from the pix on their site there were no thin spots in the bowls (and that is the only place i will really be removing very much material)

think you could post a pic????

thanks

as I suggested before - and why you cant trust a slice to tell how thick the bowl is, or anywhere else for that matter, is that the casting is very much different side to side than it is front ot back in most heads
I can almost guarantee he went thru the waterjacket at 1, or 10 o'clock in the one axis, and about 10 oclock on the long axis - if you can picture it in 3d

Hay dave,
How about a little bit more elaboration on your Stage One PDR head.

i am not a machinist or engineer and dont know what you are talking about

but i have ported enough cyl heads to know that every casting is a little diff

and that same heads are also a lot alike...

core shift yada yada - i understand how that works

how far into the bowl did he hit water, that is what i would like to know

all i really want to do is the bowls and maybe widen and polish the ex port

gonna blend the edge that the factory tool made when they did the valve recess too

i am just looking to increase low lift flow (in n out), and wanting to open ex up to same cross secion as manifold, not gonna go hog wild

I found the water jacket in the pocket, being stupid and hogging out around the valve guide. I was blending out toward the exhaust port and the burr fell through. I am happy with the Piers head, but I can't tell you how much difference it made, as I made a few changes at the same time.
If I remember the boost numbers dropped a little.....I chocked that up to better flow. Pyro was down some also...again I didn't keep exact notes.
I used an ultrasound machine we use in the trade to measure thickness....and found that had I not poked thought I think the head would have cracked in one of the cylinders, hydrolocking the engine. I had some very thin places....in the same place, other valves. In hind sight.....I knew very little about what I was doing. Looking at Piers' pictures doesn't show much for the untrained eye. So hindsight being what it is ....you know the rest. I would recommend a head from PDR.

As a wise junkyard man said to me...."Education costs money, at the university or the school of hard knocks."

Don, I got the stage one....with fire rings. I don't remember the breakdown on the price of each thing. But getting it to my door was about 2400 total. Cummins wanted 1400 for a reman head.

ouch

thats 1/3 of what i just paid for my p-pump truck

i hooked that thing up to my trailer yesterday and took it for a test spin

trailer brakes work, controller works, running lights work, but none of the other lights did? but man, that thing seems quicker pullin the load than it does empty! guess that cuz i have just been putt'in it around but with the trailer when i gave it some throttle i let it pull to about 2700

off topic question-

what are you pulling?

sometimes I wish I would have gotten my dads old 97. its an identical twin to what your new truck was originally-pw7

had a fiberglass scooped hood, alum wheels, fuel plate and a pacbrake. my intro to diesels so to speak, but i have always loved the 93 and older body.

end hijack
