What about a supercharger

How to make it go fast

like someone kinda said already-supers use power to make power but turbos are using exhausted power to make power there for being more efficient. also about the top fuel's makin 100+ psi-thats not right. they only make about 40-50 pounds depending on there setup. i've talked to a couple of drivers and tuners about this and im sure they know. and all there answers were between 40-50 depending. and on motors like that it actually takes allot more power to make that super spin that boost because of the type of charger they are. o by the way-im also studying high performance auto :wrench: so i know more about gassers then diesels but i cant seem to tear myself away from a cummins

You are correct sir. They are needed most at low rpm situations where the turbo charger (some old ones don't even HAVE the turbo) will no make sufficient pressure to clear, or "scavenge" the cylinders with fresh air (since there is no exhaust stroke). When the turbo starts spooling, it feeds into the supercharger in series, multiplying the boost for higher power density and efficiency. Detroits and EMD's favor this set up (some EMD's will spin the turbo itself off of a set of clutches untill the exhaust gasses can take over).

Dad had a 6V92T in our old straight job Chevy Bison... I loved the sound of that Screamin Jimmy!.
On REALLY large diesels like a Sulzer, Mitsubishi, or MAN B&W... we use large 50-100kw squirrel cage blowers (yes... an electric supercharger, but I still wouldn't buy one on ebay!) and piston underside pumping (PUP). Basically a set of reed valves like in a 2 stroke dirt bike except the valves are larger than dinner plates.

If I can find the picture... I'll show you a sweet Mercedes OM617 3.0L turbo diesel with a unique super/ turbo set up like the original poster described (parallel set up).

That would be cool! Got the pic yet? ;)

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

As far as I know the detroit 2 cycle does not have a "supercharger" It is called a blower. They run at very low boost. They are on the intake side as PToombs said. They are gear driven. When the cyl goes about half way down ports are uncovered by the piston and the exaust valve is open. The air comes in the ports and blows out the exaust. These engines are not as efficent due to not all the dirty air gets flushed out. Come ride with me in my 8v71. 2100 rpms sound like 10,000 rpms.
