I Like My PS IC

Postby Ace » Sun May 18, 2008 5:34 am

I installed one last year and it works great. They fit, but only just and it ain't easy getting them installed and everything back together properly. The pyro's never been past 1,100 even with the pump maxed since installing that IC.

I had one of those tiny banks kits in my 89. It did not flow good for me either. I replaced with a 2001 powerstroke unit. Still working on things including new S300 and Stans 4 inch exaust so I can not tell how its going to run yet. I want some of tims cooler tubes but I have blown my update money for this year. Sorry Tim...... I was looking forward to a shinny 3 inch tube under the hood. May have to settle for a painted exaust pipe.

You want one off of a 99-03 7.3l Powerstroke. Make sure to get one with aluminum end tanks, some of them came with plastic end tanks that rupture at lower boost pressures than the aluminum tanks do. The 6.0l intercoolers are much bigger (comparable to the 3rd gen Cummins intercooler) and won't fit, at least not if you want to keep the grill  . You can also use a 2nd gen Dodge/Cummins intercooler, but I don't think that swap is as easy (comparatively) as the Powerstroke IC swap. Look up flashgordon on here, he did a write up on putting in the 2nd gen Cummins intercooler.

gear jammer 91" wrote:Before the cooler I could hit 1400 degrees and 31# of boost in fifth at 100mph. Now I'm looking at 1300 and around 27# of boost at the same speed in the same gear. For general driving I lost 100 degrees on the pyro witch is pre turbo and around 3# of boost. For free it works good I was just really hoping for more. The fins are clean and open on the inside and out. I tried to put this pic in the last post but my computer was having issue's. My water/meth kit showed up today so I'll be able to get her cooled down enough to tow with one way or another.

That is a Banks (NON Intercooled) intercooler.
The 2nt gen or the P/S are a lot bigger.
The Holes are in the right spot for a 2nt gen,.......Just need to be larger

NON intercooled truck= 2nt gen

Intercooled truck......= P/S

IF you go this rought it will make for the Least amount of Fab!

Here is a link that will help if you truck is a 89-91 non intercooled truck and you want to intercool it!

It Ain't Exactly a Straight "Swap"

Postby Ace » Sat May 24, 2008 5:57 am

You'll find my install thread in the DTR sticky with a blow-by-blow account and the gotchas I encountered along with a parts list. That should give you a pretty good idea what's involved. It is non-trivial to say the least, if you have A/C and want to keep it.

All the same pics (full-sized) can still be seen in the links below my sig.
