Don't feel bad as this is a big enough problem that Snow now has it in large very bold writing in its instruction manuals. It just sounded like exactly my same problem.
I believe the back firing is the fire being put out and then the extreme cylinder head pressure from the uncompressable water basically hydro locking the cylinder.(the smoke you seen being unburnt fuel and water vapor) I had tore the H/G in 4-5 places and I run studs and fire rings. The gasket had been torn very badly as I had water in oil,oil in water, and water poring out the back of the block. All fixed now tho.
