Should be able to run for years now between oil changes, no worries.

That resevoir holds a bit over 3 quarts and there's a little filter inside. Found it on eBay. It looked like it was from a 60s, maybe 70s era rig. Guy said the part# ref'd some model Mack truck, PS reservoir. I was happy to learn Wix even still makes the filters. I figure I'll run it a couple years, drain the reservoir, change the filter and re-fill. The pump runs off the same circuit as my tranny filter:

The pumps have switch on the dash and I run them for 15 or 20 minutes at a time on long drives after they get warmed up every couple weeks or so.

Mid '80's Diamond Reo uses the same thing. Buddy has 2 of them. You did plug the filler hole right? Or have the dipstick for it? ;)

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Dang! Now I know why I have to keep filling it up!! :o

No, the dipstick is long gone and the hole it used to occupy permanently sealed. Despite being rated at 90W, Syntorq fluid flows really well. The pump is just an old style autopulse fuel pump. Seems to do fine for the simple task of circulating the fluid on an occasional basis for short periods.

i ran that stuff the first time round. my unit shifted way too hard. was a chore to drive. this time i put sta lube syn in it. outta a 5 gal drum that was at my buddies shop. shifts a lot smoother now. oh, and even with the stock deep sump on it i only change the fluid once a year. is that not often enough? i am not that worried about wear. i have a friend that will rebuild it for me for free when it wears out. so far i have beat the crud outta that thing with no probs

I suppose they are practically indestructible as long as you keep good oil in them. Problem is, it only holds about one and half quarts. I think a yearly change would be plenty. GV recommended interval is 5,000 mi. but they don't say if that refers to conventional or synthetic fluid.

Odd you mentioned the hard shifting w/Syntorq. That is the fluid GV is recommending now for SMOOTHER shifting. But I think you can run just about any gear oil in it and it'll do fine if it gets changed. The main reason I upgraded the sump is just so I don't have to worry about that too much. Got plenty other stuff to worry about...

actually, i think you are right - they rec the sw to that stuff later

i have never ran it - wonder how it compares to the sta lube?

Mine is just now a year old, and the Syntorq spec was an addendum (extra page stuffed in) to the manual. The stuff is VERY good, but very EXPENSIVE, as well. It's rated 75w-85w, and is basically a full-syn GL4 synchromesh fluid. Looks to pour more like a light motor oil, to me. $15-$20/qt. depending on source.

good thing it only takes a couple of qts then

that is what the sta lube syn is rated

something like that

75/85 - pours thin

you know, 20 yrs ago they were telling ya to put atf in those things

Not totally I guess. I called GV and explained the situation they told me the clutches were burned up (thanks to the guy my nephew got it from!) and that I would need to send it in for a rebuild exchange, $750 large. That ain't happening any time soon.... :(
