Wouldn't TDC at least be close to where the pump is timed with the gears and the proper markings?
Line up cam and crank, then line up the pump marks with the proper cam mark.

The pump does not have a tdc. I am not for certain but I believe the keyway in the pump points at the cylinder that is injecting, so you would start with the key pointing to the line for cylinder #1 and with the engine on TDC injection #1 it should be close to lining up with the key slot in the gear. Accurate timing must be performed either by the dial indicator method or by a dynamic timing tool after installation.

To get it close there is a mark on the front of the pump in line with #1 line. Line up the keyway with it, then do as KTA said.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

I never figured it was "Rocket Science" on a VE? :?
I mean, there's timing marks and the pump has adjustment slots, so if it runs like poo, advance it.
Sure hope like hell my '91 flatbed doesn't blow up, because now I'm just about SURE I did something wrong 7 months back, when I re-sealed a replacement pump and put a 3200 spring in it.

Heaven forbid you pull it and fix it before it does, huh Mark? ;)

The OP pushes them clear to the head and I haven't heard of any detrimental issues with that, so far.
Others even advance them a tooth with no major issues.

I fail to see what the concern is?
So long as the fuel isn't being sprayed out of the bowl, there should be none.
