Do-it-yourself straight piping on a 1st Gen

Postby Firstgenfanatic » Wed Aug 08, 2007 12:01 pm

I just went out and bought 3ft of 3" exhaust pipe and 2 clamps. Has anyone on here done their own straight pipe work? I'm just replacing the muffler section......thats it. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

That's what I did on mine at first. I used 2 couplers (3"id x 3"id", welded them to the 3' pipe, then put the pipe in with the clamps. It sounded 8) .

Well, no more in driveway exhaust fabbing for me. I tried to straight pipe my pickup tonight with clamps and hand-tools (don't have a welder). 3hrs later I have the muffler cut off, a pile of clamps and straps, and no way to secure it perminantly. After this, I'm never doing exhaust stuff on my own again. I can see it being easy if you have a welder........but clamps and hand tools is not gonna cut it. Time to fork out some cash and it get professionally done at the local muffler shop.

Straps?

I thnik the "straps" part is probably where you went wrong. You need slip-fit couplers to mate the tubes. It can be done with the right sized couplers and clamps.

Happy to report that the exhaust work has been taken care of. It now sounds good. 8)
