Turbo upgrade or replace w hx35?

Postby jltait » Sat Nov 19, 2011 8:08 am

Hey all,
I have about 1500 miles on my old chevy square body crew cab conversion with a NV4500 and 4.10 gears. Runs nice but it has the 21cm2 exhaust housing which is not doing it any favors in performance. I have already added a 3200 gov spring and re-clocked the fuel pin.
I am really wanting it to pull harder off the bottom, it really does not seems to build much boost below 1800 rpm and then its still slow till past 2000rmp. I want to eventually run 5x.012's (maybe 5x.10's even)from SDX. My goals are to get the towing performance where I can pull 10K# confidently.
For the money my upgrade options are BD diesel 16cm2 upgrade housing for $150, or Gillette 18cm2 for $125, Gillette 16cm2 for $195, or other input for a turbo upgrade.

or should I just plan on going with an HX35, will the hx35 perform substantially better than a H1C with upgraded turbo housing?

I know there is information out there, but it all seems tailored toward competition use and that is not in my plans.
thanks in advance for the input.

I'm also interested in this. I pull 10k with the Crew and could use a little power.

A hx35 would make a nice upgrade for a stock or mild truck. Because the exhaust housing is smaller it will spool faster but your egt will get hot if its getting alot of fuel. I would get a hx35 or find the 12cm2 exhaust housing and put it on the h1c. If you get bigger injectors you may have to just watch your egt and let out if it gets to hot.

I ran the hy9 for along time and it was an excellent turbo even with the mods untill the pod's went in then on top end it got too hot.i then went to the hx35w with the 12cm. my problem was solved great power and spooled fast.......but then the quest for more power set in and the 5x14's went in and it was the same story once again. now i have the s300. it does an ok job but i could use a bigger turbo for pullin my toyhauler.....i think im going to give it a big buddy to play with. i,m thinkin and s475,haha cant wait.

but for your set up I would go with the hx35w with the 12cm...cheep and easy to install and works good.

I have a S300 in my Fummins conversion and love it. I tow about 6000 lbs with 3.73 gears and have plenty of power. My egts never get above 1100 so far. Have not had it together long.
