Cam swap

Postby ahale2772 » Mon Nov 21, 2011 6:09 am

Got me a Hamilton 188/220 coming in the mail :D

going to throw it in this weekend, Ive got 24v tappets a'waiting and im in the process of making the tools to do the job. I know Tacoclaw (Levi) is planning on doing a cam as well so I thought I'd post up and share how the job goes.

Ive allready made the 12 dowels for lifting the lifters and I'm experimenting on a lifter catcher (troff) type thing and the tool to actually pull the lifters up in. BC847 Has allready done a killer write up on the job ( http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/dev/ ... 55129.html ), so I wont be doing a step by step breakdown

But i figure throwing a big cam in a mostly stock VE will be pretty interesting. I'm looking for a drop in Egt's, boost and smoke. I'd like to burn some of the fuel i'm wasting at WOT and see if I can get this hx to spool any faster.

anyways... so far ive tried a lifter troff on a spare 6bt and failed miserably, turns out the schedg 40 PVC was too thick walled to let the lifter fall down on it side (yeah BC847,you mentioned that in your writeup but i didnt listen  ), so instead it just stayed in place and fell into the pan...Oh well, ive since made another out of thinner material and i'm going to try that out tonight.

I'll be buying a pan gasket to have on hand... just in case

tally on parts so far (for you frugal minded first genners)

188/220- 699$
hamilton ZDDP Break in lube-14$ X2
24V VP44 lifters cummins P/N 3942565- 13$ X12
1/2 x 48" dowel stock- 2.50 X4

yet to buy the timing cover gasket and crank seal.

also going to replace and red lock tight my front IP seal while im in there

If the tools I make work well, Ive got no issues with having them as the 1stgen.org standard cam swap tool kit, just pay the shipping and you can borrow them 8)

Why go to 24v lifters?
93 D250- pump maxed, 3800 spring, hx35, denny T pump top, 7x.015 injectors, timing+, Coolertubz, raptor 150, boost nipple, 4" DP to 6" aussie stacks, built tranny, asa intake, DNR tps, more HP mods, isspro boost, fuel pressure, egt, tranny temp, 5k tach, chrome and powder coating here & there.

they have a larger tappet face, I believe the 24v cams have wider lobes, to help spread out the load on each lobe. Zach made his cab lobes as wide as a 24V cam, to help combat crappy oil and premature failure. this is also the reason for ZDDP break in lube. Heavy metals like Zinc plug up DPF systems so new oils dont have them, but when breaking in new cams its a must.

What about a piece of class 200pvc for the trauth? It is much thinner then schedule 40. Why did you decide on the 188/220 over the 181/210?

yeah Dazed, thats exactly what I got after the schedual 40, I just need to cut it.

the 181/188 debate was a bit of a long one. Eventually Zach suggested the 188 just because in the future it will benifite that ported head. He said the 181 would actually be better for a stockish VE with normal bolt on mods. But i dont feel like buying two cams, eventually i'll just swap this cam into my other engine when that one is ready.

he said that the 188 is pretty similar to the 181 except that it hits a bit harder all through the rpm range. I think the two cams are very similar down low, but the 188 starts to pull hard a 2500+rpm all the way to 4600 ish.

essentially its just room to grow.

hopefully my drive pressures dont go nuts, ive really got to get my guage hooked up. Zach said the boost pressure in the log might go down a bit but because of the increased mass of air in the cylinders, the drive and cylinder pressures might go up a bit....

clipped 4000rpm govener spring and headstuds will be next

What'd you hear about them?

They've been the dyno crew at both of the Hebron shows I went to, AFAIK. I actually dynoed my first time on their dyno. Did 268hp, seemed about right for the mods I had. It had started raining and they didn't want to get their tach pickup wet, so I didn't get any torque #'s, but I haven't heard anyone complaining about them. :?:

just that they run trucks really hard, I dont need to have some dyno monkey jump in my truck and blow my headgasket at 4000rpm, 150mph and 1700degree egt's. Not till I buy some head studs atleast, cant really afford failure right now

Oh, that may be true. They might as well, you are on a dyno after all, right? 8)

I was probably their favorite customer though. I told the guy the only thing he needed to worry about was pull in 4th only and let off at 3k RPMs. The rest of those gauges are for show anyways.

If your trying to see what the trucks making for hp on a dyno, run it as hard as possible. No point to baby it.

No cam for me this weekend, the big brown van didnt deliver it :(

I keep half remembering ill have to remove the lift pump, but im sure ill forget

Not worried about running it hard on the dyno, but 150mph is not where my truck makes power, and im not looking to have sustained egts of 1500+ degrees for anymore time than needed. Im just going to wait for now, atleast untill a re- tourque
