VE front seal retainer

Postby ahale2772 » Thu Dec 01, 2011 5:27 am

Heyo,

Swapping pumps on my truck soon, Need to deflower my spare before it goes on the truck.

was going to locktight my front seal when I had the cam out but I never found a place to buy the seal. thought I could get it from cummins, but they told me to pound sand.

first, where is the best place to get a seal?

second, how should I retain the seal? I know red locktight its the common solution, but Im a big fan of piece-of-mind, so a mechanical retainer would be my best bet. I could spin something up on the lathe, no problem, but it dosnt look like there is much room behind the gear.

Id like to push atleast 50 regulated PSI through the vane pump at WOT

and FYI i really dont want to dissasemble the pump, aka no snap ring for me

The whole rebuild kit from cummins for the VE pump is $15, it should have the new seal included

when I went to cummins, I was told the only thing they want to carry for the pumps is the pump itself, whole units.

i guess ill ask again, but two of my trusted parts guys both told me I was SOL.

anyone have a part number?

Fuel shop, Bosch part number DGK 121 Should be about $16.

I had my front seal out and was going to strip the pump and have a snap ring groove cut in it. I don't know how they do that, there didn't look like enough room to cut a groove unless you cut the hole deeper and move the seal back. So I loctited it and called it good.

yeah, ive seen a few pictures, Cumminsking had his done. It would not be a huge project if you could find a way to chuck a VE into a lathe, but that might not be so easy.

I'm going to just mill a washer type retainer and drill a few small pilot holes to keep it on, and locktight it at the same time

probably this weekend, i'll let you know

Ripped ye-olde-VE out today and made myself a seal retainer.

first, I replaced the seal, and locktighted it in.

then, I took a chunk of aluminumand widdled it down to about 1/8 of an inch (prob a bit more, didnt measure it) put a little step in it to keep tension on the seal. drilled 3 holes in it, tapped the VE housing for 3 1/4 inch long 6-32 allen screws. conterbored the retainer a bit and threw her on.

Works like a jem holding back all 18 psi that my piston pump is throwing out. I took the regulator off my system and thought the piston pump would shoot out 30 psi or so. its only 3 years old, kind of dissapointed.

guess i'll have to throw a reaaaaallllyyy high psi pump on

new seal, locktight

Wash your hands you dirtbag!
How much room do you have between the retainer and the gear? Probably hard to tell without an extra gear to slide on the shaft.
As for the LP, do you have a strainer ahead of it? Maybe pull the inlet and check the screen, it may have sucked up grit and scratched the piston.

I'd be interested in the spacing as well.

Is the future plans on work on other folks pumps ;)

Looks awesome! Grab a real LP and let us know how much that baby can handle before you put it back on the engine.

Nice job! You should do a test to find the pressure the seal with blow at with and without the retainer.

thanks fellas, theres a little more than .3 of an inch between the IP and the gear. I'll shove the spare pump back together to get a picture with a real measurment.

I would like to test it... clearly at this point the seal lip is the next thing to blow. But IDK what the dynamics of the test would be...maybe it would act different when it was spinning on the truck instead of just on the bench with airpressure to it...what do ya'll think?

Pete...at least its not my feet

Ellis... making this sucker was nerve racking. If I could make some on a cnc mill it would be best, but the drilling into the VE case was the hardest part. IDK how much room there is, so I only drilled about a solid 1/4 inch hole. then started them with a regular 6-32 tap...then ground the tip off the tap to make a 100% bottom tap...locktighted the 3 small bolts as well

HOPEFULLY (if the dirtbag ever calls me back) i'll be getting a clean d350 soon, If I do, the red truck will get a big big fuel system and I can really see howmuch the seal will hold...and what effects it has on case pressure.

Most ive seen out of this pump is 22 psi now. there is a screen filter downstreem, so hopefully the pump is still in good shape

Is it possible for you to make the ID of the retainer smaller so as to put pressure on the seal itself to prevent it from blowing out?

Also, do you have the stock fuel lines? Most p-pumpers put 1/2" lines in to help support 500 or more horse.
