I finished the trans a couple weeks ago. It wasn't a difficult job to replace bearings and syncros, and I saved about a grand from having a shop do it.
Image

I found the trans on Craigslist for a screaming deal, but it did have a chunk broken out of the shifter tower.
Image

Welded on a piece of plate, then epoxied the the seam from the inside. I think it will hold up just fine.
Image

I also received my Atlas transfer case a couple weeks ago. The sales rep suggested I go with the 300m alloy input shaft upgrade when he heard it was going behind a Cummins. I also upgraded to Comp gears, and a HD 1410 yoke rear output. It's a 3.8:1 ratio box.

Well, the rock crawling competition season is over, and I only have one customer's Jeep to finish before I can get back to my project. Hopefully I'll have some progress pictures to post up in a couple weeks. Here's what I've been up to in the meantime if you care:

That looks like it is going to go bad in a hurry! I always thought rock climbing was cool, I watch it whenever I catch it on TV.

Thought I should update this a bit. I haven't made a ton of progress, but stuff is happening slowly.

I Baffled the oil pan. Cleaned and blasted the inside of the pan in the weld areas. Most of the pan is double walled, which was a bitch to weld when the oily goo between the plates heated up and blew out into the weld. Good smokey times. :smokin:
Image

I made my own trap door baffle for the center divider. Yes, they are door hinges from the local Ace hardware. :f2:
Image

Completed with horizontal baffles.
Image

torquing up the new head bolts.
Image

Bringing in the 14 bolt for tear down/clean up.
Image

Getting ready to tear apart the front 60 in my garage. The Ford 1 ton brakes are ridiculous.
Image

I also redid the rear lower cross member in the frame to extend back further to protect the T-case. I also decided to narrow it 1". The outside of the "frame" measures 31" wide, about 2 1/4" narrower than a YJ frame. I'm running narrowed axles, so I figured all the tire clearance I can get is important.
Image

Fitting the trans/t-case to build a trans mount.
Image

This will support the trans and the t-case. I don't see a need to run a tail support with this.

The engine mounts are done, and the engine mount cross member tube is tacked in. Here's the doubler on the frame side of the engine mounts. Engine mount gusset plates will land on the doubler.
Image

The oil pan skid plate sides are also the inside mount for the lower links. Because the Cummins pan is so wide, I needed to maximize the space to get good lower link triangulation. This the the inside link mount reinforcement doubler.
Image

Here's what the drivetrain in the frame and the engine skid is starting to look like. It will eventually be plated on the bottom of course.
Image

I also ordered 4 FOA 2 1/2 x 14" coil overs to be used as coil carriers. I did order them with light valving though, so they can share some of the load from heavy engine weight and the rears being mounted on a trailing arm. I also ordered 4 - 2 1/2" x 2" travel bumps/cans. I only ordered 2 bypass shocks for now so I can use them for mock-up. I did a bunch of reading on valving, then basically took a WAG on what I thought I would need. I'll be able to run calcs for the last two when the truck is further along. Too much unknown right now to order the right valving.

Weighed these for the hell of it:
Trans and T-case.

Engine + 40# stand.

840 lbs. seemed light to me. I'd guess the Cummins with balancer, exhaust manifold, and flywheel is probably around 900 lbs.

Obligatory shiny parts photo. These are my rod ends for the upper and lower suspension links
Image

Really happy with how this thing is turning out. It's not really normal to focus on one part of the chassis, as most builders tack the whole thing together, then weld it out when its completely assembled. With this project, I'm building around the engine and cab, so I think building the "foundation" first on the table gives me an advantage instead of trying to work around everything.

These Ruffstuff weld washers are bitchin'. No more cutting out my own.
Image

Here's a few pics of the frame as its coming together. Still more work needed on the engine cross member and trans mount cross member. If the engine skid frame looks crooked, it is....on purpose. The drivetrain is offset to the passenger side 1".
Image

Image

Image

Well, crap. I didn't see this coming. I'll have to notch this out for bolt clearance.
Image

I love TIG. Getting better at it.

I will say your fab work is my dream.

The exhaust manifold is probably close to 30#. The stock turbo another 25-30#.

Epic stuff, man. That must be one hell of a welding table to have all that stuff just hanging out in the middle of it like that.
