On the hazard flasher. That is the silver canister looking fellow in the fuse box, right? Do we have one for the turn signals and hazards, or just one for both? I think second gens have one for each however I don't see another so I'm thinking we only have one. Regardless, I think I'm going to replace it and see if I get hazards again. If not, you all can deal with it at S.O.P.

There is one for each, that probably explains why they aren't working! ;)

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Where is the one for the hazards? Are they both (supposed) to be in the fuse box under the dash?

And I've been too busy tracking down a topper to deal with it. Not having hazards really doesn't bother me, but I suppose it is something that should work so I'll fix it soon. Before SOP at least.

Re: Parker's Build Thread (Now with more electrical problems!)

peobryant wrote:Well I've had an unusual string of good luck.

Went to NAPA for an alternator and it turns out I had bought my previous one from NAPA with a lifetime warranty so I got a new (re-man) one for free. I installed it and IT WORKS! MY TRUCK IS FINALLY CHARGING! We'll see how long it lasts but hopefully I won't have any more troubles with my charging system for a long while yet.

I thought the starter on the Subaru was going out as well so I jacked it up to remove it, and one of the cables has a very loose nut. Tightened it up and haven't had a problem since. I still need to get the timing belt done but that will have to wait for a few weeks.

Now I just have to tackle the other electrical problems my truck is having...

20 days...

Started her up last night after work and everything was fine, charging like normal, light were normal and when I went to start her up today she isn't charging. I'm thinking it has to be a ground problem somewhere because I have a new alternator, a basically brand new voltage regulator (only a few months old) and a battery that tested fine. The battery was in the truck when I purchased it years and years ago so it may be on it's way out but the intermittent charging (although it was perfect for 20 days...) makes me think a ground issue. Sound about right?

Anyone wanna buy a pretty nice truck?

Someone tell me if this guy is full of crap.

I was told by an AutoZone worker that these older trucks (he didn't specify our trucks, just said older ones) have an easy way to test a bad alternator. With the truck on disconnect the negative battery cable and if it turns off you have a bad alternator, if it stays on it's good. I just did this and my truck turned itself off. So if what he says is true my 20 day old alternator has failed and I need a new one.

Thanks.

I don't know what this proves, but I have started my truck, removed the battery and ran down the road for a while (10+ miles) and then it died. I have the same alternator as I did then and I only replaced the VR since, which was the cause of the debacle.

I think my story would say the AutoZoner is correct and that's the 2nd time I've ever heard of that happening.

If the regulator is bad it won't supply power either and the truck will die. You may still have a bad wire or a bad VR, or an alternator. If you ran down the road before it quit I'd say that you may have a bad wire or connection.

Try jumping a wire from your hot battery post over to your FSS and see if it starts charging. If not, try a cheap regulator and do the same thing again.

A bad battery will nuke a whole electrical system if it drops a cell and the VR tries to compensate. I've had mine go through a starter, alternator, and VR all from a bad battery. :?

I've ordered a replacement alternator from NAPA and it should be here tomorrow. I'll be getting yet another voltage regulator and replace it to see if it does any good. My battery tested as good but I've been wanting to replace it with an Optima Red Top recently so we'll see about that I suppose.
