New Era 330 injectors & Smoke Issue

Postby Mike T. » Fri Oct 12, 2007 3:56 pm

The only issue I'm having with smoke is at lite to normal acceleration. It seems no matter how slow I accelerate I see black. I'd like to reduce the smoke a bit but not lose the performance I've gained. I've turned the smoke CCW 2 turns but didn't see any change; I'm guessing a starwheel adjustment. These injectors don't seem to haze at idle after the truck is warm. The 330s are supposed to have the same spray angle at stock injectors, yet I noticed that washers that came with the injectors were half the thickness as the stock ones. I've ordered stock washers from cummins I'll see if they make any difference. I think the 330s are about equal to PODs. I'm timed 1/8+. Any opinions / help on smoke issue appreciated.
Mike

I have the 370's, all I have read is to use the thin washers. They help with smoke. It will smoke more with the thick washers. I have my starwheel bottomed out, but have a valet on it. No boost, no extra fuel. Mine smokes bad if I get on it even slightly hard out of a stop. The biggest thing I have found is accelerate very slowly til the rpms are up, then it's ok. I have a 5 speed, helps to get the r's up because I can hold it in gear.
The other option is to step on it hard to get it to spool!

I just installed my valet I and didn't see much of a difference on smoke at low speeds. What size washer should I get? I think cummins makes .5, 1.0 and 1.5 washers. It's hard to be specific with a cummins parts guy they just want your serial number. If I say I want a .5 washer they can't seem to do that. Chuck at New Era said he sent 1.0 with my injectors..

I put in .020 (american) .5 metric. I got them from work, Case dealer. I think they had those when I got them. I bought them used, barely. Chuck should know, he sells them! I can't remember if I saved the ones that came with them or not. I wanted new seals all the way around so I got those.

Use the 215hp washer for the 96-98 p-pump trucks its the best for most apps. You could try advancing the timing some more to help with your smoke.

Thanks Pete, KTA for the help. I'll order the washers and try advancing the timing some more.. I'm at about 3/16th now.

KTA, how thick is that one?
I set mine 1/8, when I checked it with the gauge, it was 1.65mm. Think I can go more, or is that good enough for mostly driving? I'd like to tune it up some for the (alleged) spring dyno day.

the 94-98 washers are .028

at least the ones i got from becks were...

i think timing is a trade off

do you already have a switch for the afc?

or dont you have the ic version of the ve with the afc that you can power up for more case pressure and timing?

josh dyno'ed his truck today. that switch was good for almost 30 hp on his truck (6x18's and sps). he set the timing at .075" and dyno'ed it with the switch off first (3 pulls), then 3 more with it on. but he did say the more he advanced it the more bottom end he lost.

so i guess it all comes down to a) your combo and b) what you are looking for...

Don, you mean the switch to turn power on to the KSB? Adjusts timing?AFC is the fuel cone.
