Mechanical or electric is up to you. Some like the simplicity of mechanical, others like the high volume out put of the higher end electric such as airdog, raptor, ect...

GPH all depends on your needs.... the reality is even 50gph will support lots of power.

As for psi, once again depends on needs. in a mild to medium set up the ve pump really only needs like 3psi. Don't want to run over 15 psi unless the front seat on the injection pump is addressed (loctite). There are people running almost 500hp on a 12 psi inlet pressure. I made 414 on 0 psi of inlet pressure (I was way past my lift pump).

A common less expensive way is the carter electric pumps or the piston lift pump (low pressure). you can pm me if you are interested in the latter.

wow thats crazy not like a common rail or vp trucks those lift pumps go out the IP takes a sthi but thanks good to know im probably would go with electric so im guessing as far as fuel PSI gauge goes 15 is plenty i was looking at getting a 30 just cause all the common rails ive worked on had 15 psi and i didnt wanna max out the gauge and thanks for the input

Ya, go a max of 15.... Our pumps have an internal vane pump, so in a theoretical sense they do not need a lift pump to run. It will however usually wear the pump out. My pump was ran by the previous owner for 2 years with no lift pump and no damage had been done to the pump.

Ya, well in a stock fueling truck it sure isn't noticeable. It went from terd mobile to....terd mobile. LOL

I'm running the low pressure piston pump. I insed it in less than a hour in my driveway. I'm going to be replacing it here soon though for something of more volume. Either way you go you will be happy. I just preffer mechanical for goofy personal reasons.

This is interesting. I bought a "purple dot" piston lift pump and a fuel pressure gauge a little while ago. A couple weeks ago I installed the gauge so I could get a baseline before I put on the other pump.

My stock diaphragm lift pump puts out 4 psi at idle. Whats more, under full throttle climbing a hill or whatever I cannot get it to drop below 3 psi. I was expecting to be able to pull it down to 0 with ease but that has not been the case. Now I question needing the LP piston lift pump at all.

I don't intend to ever make more than 300 hp. Stock diaphragm lift pump FTW?

Put a load behind your truck and turn up that power screw a little, you will see it drop to zero. Go piston for sure.

I wouldn't say it's for the win, but it will probably suit your needs. I didn't like it due to the fact that if the diaphragm goes out it puts fuel in your oil. Throw a small screen before a piston pump and I'm not too sure anything could go mechanically wrong.

The 2nd gen piston pump i purchased has a small screen built into the inlet, not sure how many have that?

They all do. Put a strainer inline ahead of it anyways. I drove mine 600 miles and was sweating the pressure dropping steadily for the last couple hundred. When I got to my destination I pulled the inlet fitting and the screen was plugged solid. It also scratched the piston a little from the crap going thru it, and I lost a couple PSI from that. :(

For those who are upgrading to piston pumps, do yourself a favor and run 3/8" id fuel line at least.our trucks came with 5/16"and that limits a lot of fuel flow. Less restriction before, greater efficiency after.
