KSB switch question

Postby BLACKOUT93 » Mon Nov 12, 2012 3:48 pm

Ok guys so im finally back on here after awhile trying to decide what i am going to do with my truck.
well anyways ive decided to keep it seeing as I FINALLY got my dang title
so anyway this is my question:
I am about to rebuild my pump with new seals and what not.
But i was wondering about the KSB advance switch modification.
i have a 93 with an intercooler (duh) which means it has a newer style pump and all i have to do is attach a switched hot wire to the solenoid....
bbbuuuuuttttttt......i was wondering if i should put in a resistor of some kind to drop the voltage down to 10v.
On all the other forums they talk about the solenoid running off of 10v but then they dont say a damn thing about what to do when wiring the switch up. :bh:
I have given up trying to follow all the other forum pages because nobody lays out all of the info i need.
I just want a straight answer and i want to hear it from the guys who know the 1st gens inside and out. (plus i hate cummins forums because they wont let me sign up)

It is a 12vdc solenoid. It should get 12vdc.

Never heard of any reason to run otherwise. :?

ok good stuff...i was confused because i kept on reading that it was 10vdc and i didnt think it made sense haha
would it be a bad thing if i wired it up to the battery when im having alternator surge issues?

That shouldn't hurt it. Guys that run 5.9's in conversions on equipment and odd stuff just run a wire thru a switch from the battery. With a fuse. ;)

That's a good question. I looked thru my FSM, and it runs direct off the key switch, which is fed from a fusable link, with no rating given. :( I would think 15 or 20 amps should be plenty. Usually if the soleniod fails, they just quit working, not short out and burn up. The fuse will save stuff if something weird happens. Safety 1st!

FWIW I think the early, wax-style KSBs required the 10v. I know my wiring diagram is showing a resistor of some sort inline.

update....i got the switch in and working just fine. with the exception for today when i flipped the switch and nothing happened. i kept flipping it on and off over and over and there was no change in the way it ran
oh well i guess breaking things is just part of the game we play. have to rebuild the pump anyways. plus im thinking about the army which means id probly have to sell the truck.

Maybe a wire came off, or you blew a fuse. Since it was working, I'm sure it's simple. ;)

Something to consider, the KSB solenoid is not a continuous duty solenoid like the FSS.
