can stock injectors be sent out?

Postby crossy » Tue Jan 09, 2007 10:23 pm

since I have been reading that first gen N/I injectors are pretty good 'as is' and they are larger diameter which causes problem fitting aftermarket ones in. I was wondering if the stock ones can be sent out and worked over, like extrude honing or something and rebuilt to give them better fuel rates. My 91 is a third vehic and down time is not an issue with it. I mean PODS are in the $400 range plus whatever the adapters to 9mm??? will cost. PODS are cheap but dirty and hot running, (Remember LUCAS is the prince of darkness) so can stockers be tuned up for less or equal $$. crossy

Yes they can be sent out and rebuilt.
The last injectors I got rebuilt locally (in Ct) were for a Perkins 6 and they cost $ 60 each. So do your homework and get some quotes for rebuilding before you make your final decision.
I think the adapters are in the neighborhood of $40 for the set. I'm running adapters in mine with Bully Dog +50s and they don't smoke too much until I really lean on it.

I have heard mixed results with the ninIC injectors vs PODs. Some gained, others didnt. I think there is huge potential with nonIC injectors as-is. I had a 91 that would peg a 40psi gauge in 3rd gear, mild pump tweaks and a PDR HX35 was all. An intercooler will help as much as a set of sticks. And since you have to cut and hack, may as well make it a 2ndGen or PSD intercooler, dont even mess with 1stGen.

I know a shop locally that can clean them up and reset the pop pressures for $5-10 apiece. If you need new tips, it is about $50 each.

Your stockers can be extrude honed or EDMed, but they dont like to do it if they have a lot of miles on them (over 50K). I had 240K on mine, and had to get new tips before DDP would hone them. Still came out ahead, I think, vs getting new stock tips locally.

Hey Daniel, Why don't they like to hone or EDM them if they have high miles on them? Extended use/heat cause them to get brittle?

At Muncie last year I was talking with a Dyna-Mite Diesel representative; 'til then I wasn't aware anybody made off-the-shelf injectors for first generations...

Anyways, he said that the problem with first gen injectors is that they are all starting to get rusty due to age, so most of the cores they get are unusable.

I really haven't figured out what that means yet, but I'm sure it means something.

sdstriper- something about the wear of the injector needle & the seat in the tip- they dont seat as well as they like when they get age and miles. He could have just been full of it and had some cheap tips, too, though I somehow doubt it.

Seems to me like higher miles would be honed already- the filter only takes out so much junk.

Not too far off topic I hope. Has anyone had problems getting a shop to match pop pressures and spray patterns of your injectors? I know it would be tough to confirm this unless you have a nozzle tester but any guffahs etc from the pump shop? Reason I say is my pump shop is pretty much an saslohe, he would laugh right at you if you suggested you wanted them matched, closely matched that is.

Ross, obviously you don't spend enough money at the pump shop!
The guy I use is the one we use at work. I was going to talk to him about some of the things we have been discussing.

He's the only one in town with all the equipement, and every diesel service around here recomends him...

As usual can't deal with the pricks. 95 miles away is the closest place too. Good thing we have the internet! I can get pretty much anything I need ordered right to the door.

The problem with older high mileage injectors is the bodies tend to start leaking, and you'd be buying new replacements anyhow, or pay the $300-400 core and keep your old ones.
