Towing Turbo Recommendation

Postby Horicon93 » Wed Mar 27, 2013 6:43 pm

I am planning to upgrade this summer, and am looking for a recommendation on injectors & turbo combo for towing. I have a '93 2wd auto dually with no current power mods & 3.54 gears. Towed 14K with it a couple times, but not easily. Any proven combo suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys :D

From what I've heard that seems to be universal with anyone with the combo..... the best inj/turbo towing combo seems to be Bosch 190s and an S300G turbo.

Everyone that has that combo seems to really like it.

Now saying that, there are about a hundred diff. combinations that work. Stock injectors and an hx35 is one of my cheap favorites. max the pump and you'll usually see 1200 degrees and 30ish psi max..... and a decent amount of pulling power.

Turbo wise....best bang for your dollar.....while staying reasonably priced.....hx35-60mm GDS turbine w/ 14cm exhaust housing- hx40 w/16cm exhaust housing. Anyone of those can be had for less than 500$

Injectors.....I'm still worrying over. I have 7x10s now,lots of fuel,cool-ish egts,very respectable power,ok mileage.

The problem with running small injectors (stock i/c or 190s) you wind up screwing up the fss solenoids plunger by all that extra fuel by it. That usually happens by a quick release of the go pedal. After which you'll be pulling the manual kill on the side of the pump. Now I for one am not driving a tractor or a Mack dump truck so I like my electrical shut down.

FWIW.....I've had rc have some 215HP p pump tips flow honed and installed on first gen bodies. They started life as 5x10s and now I figure they're around a 5x11,or close. I'm hoping to have them installed and the first of next week

Very first thing I'd do is a converter with yours tho

I haven't heard of too many failures with the 190s (fss). That of course only depends on how maxed the pump is.

I guess the real question for you is.... how much money do you feel like spending? 500 or 1500? How much extra power do you want when you tow? My set up will tow anything, and I still have the power to climb a 8% grade with almost anything behind.....and accelerate.

Yep,I've read it happens. That's the only reason I've never tried them. ;)

I liked my 190s for towing. Good clean power. But like Ellis93 said above, they chew up fss. Two a year in my case. I had the pump maxed though. With it turned down a bit, it was fine, just not exciting. With 3.07 gears, 35/14.50 tires, small twins, and it made 255/555. All that through a stock auto.

I think this can contribute to almost all of them. But strictly for towing, many I don't believe max their pumps..... I wouldn't. Not fun, but tows better.

as someone already said, hx35/40, 60mm upgrade or possibly an he351. they are all relatively inexpensive and give a decent upgrade while not being too wild.

Don't forget a good convertor and a TransGo TFOD kit for the tranny. Get an M&H M3 or a Denny T stage 1 fuel pin. I'd go with the GDS 14cm exhaust housing and the 60mm compressor wheel along with 5x12 injectors. Tune your pump so your egt's don't exceed 1250 on a good pull and you will be fine. I ran that setup for 2 yrs pulling a 14k 5th wheel, had plenty power and no issues.

Twins coming soon!

If my knowledge is with me today, the OP should have the 21 cm housing. An upgrade to a 14 cm housing would feel like a lightening fast spool-up comparitively.

I went with the HX35 because it has a smaller exhaust housing, a slightly larger compressor wheel, and it was dirt cheap.

It seems like I barely tip into the throttle and it starts winding up. The 18cm housing on the H1C seems too on/off to me. With the H1C, I felt like if I leaned on it, it puked a cloud of smoke, then lit and took off.

In my opinion with stock injectors, a tighter exhaust housing is hands down the best upgrade for towing.

I am hoping to stay around $800 - $1000 for the inj/turbo swap. A local guy is trying to sell me his rebuilt HX40 w/only 2K miles on it for around $500, he's pretty sure it's the 6 blade version, and it's a 60/62 but unsure of the exh. housing size. I'm not sure if it's the best route though. I've read that a 35 is barely better than the H1C, so that's why I considered the 40. I'm not in need of a hot rod so I won't be max'ing the pump, but rather tuning it to work most effectively with the injector turbo combo I choose.

RC --- Shoot me a $$ on your suggested combo. Thanks :)
