Carter 4601 pump

Postby 1STGENFARMBOY » Tue Apr 09, 2013 1:51 pm

I just installed a carter 4601 last night along with another filter, here is how the fuel path goes.

from tank in the original line to just past the edge of the tank, then 3/8th rubber to a 10 micron pre lift pump filter,
then the carter 4601, then on to a 2 micron filter and on the original filter/fuel heater on the block, and on the VE
by way of the original metal line.

I have had a holley black, walbro, and now a carter, the carter and holley both should have had 14-18 psi, but neither
one had more than 11 (the holley) the carter only has 9psi at idle and drops to 6 at WOT run.

besides putting on a mechanical pump, is there something I am doing wrong that I could change.

has anybody ran a 4601 and had higher psi.

Dar, run bigger lines. I put in a draw straw and a 1/2" id line from the tank to the LPLP and gained 3-4 psi. From the LPLP to the IP is still factory stuff. I also have a 10micron Racor water separator filter under the cab. I'd like to add a sump to get rid of the 1/4 tank issue of the straw.
If you have a 2 micron filter, you don't really need anything after that. I think with a larger line, the prefilter, and the Carter as close to the tank as you can, you can get pressures up. Drawing to the Carter thru the small line is what is choking it.

I had a feeling that was the problem, i also would like a sump, and then big lines through my set up and bypass the
factory filter/heater, then in to the VE.

I've got a Hellman sump on my green truck and it works great, but I think I might try one of these on my other truck when I get around to it.

I got my sump through Rc. I have yet to install it (super pressed for time), but it looks straight forward. No tank drop is required, so that's a huge +. I have a 4601 currently, and I'm going to keep it in the truck as a backup. They seem to be a good little pump.

Sutter got the 2 piece inner ring billet style pump. No tank drop and it' s straight forward.

That "inner x" design is the first time I've seen that design. Not sure if it's actually better or not, but it is cheaper than the other styles.

I was going to get a Hellman. I was going to cut the ring and make it a 2 piece, no big deal on that! ;) They are damn expensive though.
I see a couple things I don't like,
They don't tell you what size the outlet is.
The screw thru the middle, I didn't see an o-ring to seal it.

The cool thing is they give you the hole saw!

I think I paid $147 for my sump. Not bad for ease of install, and sump functionality. The kit came with everything but the 2 3/4" holesaw! In which it would of been nice if it did.

When I get to the point that I can post pictures I'll try to come back and show you guys what Dodge decided was adequate for us to pull fuel through inside the module... Let's just say that at two points it's less then 1/4" ID. That being said, I don't bother with draw straws anymore, I modify the inside of the module to use 1/2" line and still pull through the screen at the bottom. We've never had a customer complain of 1/4 tank issues or any FP drop related to fuel level.

As for the pump, I'd say open up the prefilter to a 20 or 40 micron screen and it will be happier too. Vane pumps aren't exactly the greatest at pulling fuel, best to try and set it up so the pump literally syphons the fuel from the tank. Disturbing the syphon with too restrictive of a filter is far more detrimental to pump life then the fine particles that a less restrictive filter would allow to pass. Now if it were a gerotor, or gear pump it would be a completely different story.
